Applicants who do not meet these qualifications will not be considered. Step into a rewarding contract opportunity supporting students as a Teacher for the Visually Impaired, working itinerantly in schools throughout the New Orleans area. This role is essential for fostering students' growth and ensuring their needs are met with expertise, compassion, and innovation.
Key Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree and active Louisiana Department of Education certification required, with specialized certification in teaching visually impaired students. Minimum of 3 years' experience in general, special, or elementary/secondary education. Experience providing Braille instruction and proficiency in assistive technology designed for visually impaired learners. Demonstrated professionalism, adaptability, and strong communication skills for engaging with colleagues, students, and families. Ability to travel daily between multiple sites, maintaining flexibility and effective time management. Familiarity with orientation and mobility training is a plus. Ability to pass required district credentialing procedures, including drug screening and fingerprinting.
Role Responsibilities:
Deliver direct instructional services to visually impaired students, adapting lessons and materials for individual needs. Collaborate regularly with general education teachers to prepare accessible instructional materials. Obtain special textbooks and resources and help integrate assistive technologies into the learning environment. Lead in-service training for school staff, ensuring comprehensive support for visually impaired students. Maintain thorough communication with the Louisiana Department of Education and perform administrative tasks as assigned. Ensure compliance with IDEA and district expectations while promoting a culture of inclusion and empowerment. This position runs from August 3, 2026, through May 27, 2027, with a full-time schedule of 35 hours per week. Physical requirements include the ability to travel between schools and occasional light lifting or equipment use.
