Job Description:
The High School Counseling Program provides education, prevention and intervention activities, which are integrated into all aspects of students' lives. The program teaches knowledge, attitudes and skills students need to acquire in academic, career and social/emotional development, which serve as the foundation for future success. The goal is for all students to achieve optimal personal growth, acquire positive social skills and values, set informed career goals and graduate high school by having reached their full academic potential to become productive, contributing members of their community and society. High School Counselor responsibilities include and are not limited to: Academic advising for all students. School Counselors support students in the development of academic plans by establishing personal goals and future plans, creating schedules tailored to students interest and academic need, and monitoring their progress towards graduation. Delivery of school counseling core curriculum in classrooms that support students in identifying their strengths and weaknesses, goal setting, building career awareness, researching college and career options. Provide short-term counseling services to meet student individual needs through small group and individual counseling. Interventions include support with social skills, executive functioning,conflict resolution, peer mediation, stress management, coping skills, newcomer transitions. Use data to identify gaps in achievement, needs, interventions, referral to programs for academic support, 504 planning, and other opportunities that support attainment. Provide comprehensive postsecondary advising (college, career, alternative programming); develop postsecondary plans using goal setting and motivational interviewing; expose students to various postsecondary programs; collaborate with other postsecondary planning programs. Support students and families from all backgrounds and circumstances in the college-going process by promoting equity and access to all programs available. Provide ongoing communication with families in regards to progress in all domains; enroll new students and orient them to the school; facilitate parent nights to support with financial aid and postsecondary transition planning, adolescent development, study skills, etc. Facilitate parent workshops on postsecondary planning and financial aid support. Support student recruitment and enrollment to CollegeBoard offerings (PSAT/NMSQT, SAT, AP classes). Provide MCAS support through educational proficiency planning and opportunities available, and student and parent outreach. Develop plans to address over•or underrepresentation of specific groups in programs such as Special Education, English Language Programs, Honors classes, Advanced Placement classes, Dual Enrollment and Early College, Pathways. Collaborate with other support staff members, teachers, family members and the greater community as a whole to support students' personal/social/emotional needs. Collaborate with family, school and community members to support students meeting academic, personal/social, college and career readiness goals. Continue to work on the content and delivery method of our curriculum in order to provide equitable access for all students and families. Maintain professional knowledge and skills for working in a diverse and multicultural work setting through PD opportunities offered within the school community and through other resources. Facilitate parent workshops on postsecondary planning and financial aid support. Works closely with the Coordinator of School Counseling. Additional responsibilities assigned by the Principal.
Qualifications:
MA DESE School Counselor Licensure, Grades 5-12 Hold a master's degree or higher in school counseling or the substantial equivalent Experience working in an urban educational setting Spanish speaking preferred Has working knowledge of ASCA and MASCA frameworks and standards Experience in a collaborative educational environment and shared decision-making modeled on Professional Learning Communities is highly desirable.

Director of School Counseling and Building Principal Terms:
All teachers are members of the Chelsea Teachers Union (CTU). The length of the school day is 6.5 hours, but subject to longer hours for schools with extended day. The number of school days are 184 days. See salary info on CPS website.
