Assesses students and helps to develop individualized education plans that specify the services and accommodations needed for each student. Works in a classroom that includes only students with IEPs, or works with students and teachers in regular classes. For students with severe disabilities, may focus on developing skills for independent living. Works as part of a team that includes therapists, school counselors or social workers.

Special Education Teacher Responsibilities:
Provide instruction and classroom support for students with emotional or behavioral disorders in a structured setting. Implement structured behavioral interventions to help students access learning successfully. Teach and reinforce coping strategies that support student self-regulation and participation. Build and support student social skills through consistent routines and guided practice. Apply PBIS or other evidence-based behavioral approaches to promote positive student behavior.
Special Education Teacher Qualifications:
Special education teaching background appropriate for working with students with emotional or behavioral disorders. Ability to implement structured behavioral interventions in a classroom setting. Experience supporting student coping strategies and social skills development. Familiarity with PBIS and/or other evidence-based behavioral methods. Ability to work effectively with students whose behavioral needs impact learning in less-structured environments.
