A Special Education Teacher teaches students who have disabilities, and adapts teaching methods to meet the needs of students. Assesses students and helps to develop individualized education plans that specify the services and accommodations needed for each student. Works in a classroom that includes only students with IEPs, or works with students and teachers in regular classes. For students with severe disabilities, may focus on developing skills for independent living. Works as part of a team that includes therapists, school counselors or social workers.

Job Description

Licensed Special Education teacher to teach content area subjects to students with disabilities. This may be done in a substantially separate setting or as part of a Resource Room model. Students in the substantially separate classes have been diagnosed with severe learning diabilities. They receive instruction in all major subjects in the Special Education setting. Resource Room students receive most of their instruction in general education, but need English and /or math instruction in a Special Education classroom. In addition to teaching, duties include acting as liaison for a group of special education students, facilitating review meetings for those students, writing the IEPs which result from those meetings, etc.
