  • K-6 Special Education Teacher The Warwick Community School, nestled in the scenic woodlands of western Massachusetts, seeks an elementary classroom school teacher committed to using evidence-based practices, providing joyful learning opportunities, and learning in nature.
Our beautiful and innovative elementary school sits on a 25-acre outdoor campus with a vernal pool, a cranberry bog, and Mount Grace for hiking! We are seeking an elementary special education teacher who will provide high-quality reading and math specially designed instruction and support place and project-based learning that is nature-inspired. Teachers who are a great fit for our school will be committed to teaching in multi-age classrooms and using standards-aligned, evidence-based, engaging curricula for deeper learning. We are also looking for teachers excited to take our foundational curriculum, based on EL Education units, and build upon it, centering the environment and student inquiry. Other curricula we use are Illustrative Mathematics (IM) in kindergarten through sixth grades and the University of Florida Literacy Institute (UFLI) in grades kindergarten through third based on the science of reading. We also work to make our curriculum both culturally responsive and personalized. We have a commitment as a community to social justice. The Role:
The Special Educator is responsible for providing specially designed instruction to students with disabilities in both general education and separate settings. The Special Educator will work collaboratively with general education, special education, and related services staff to ensure that students with disabilities have positive educational outcomes. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following: Provide direct special education services to students with disabilities. Provide explicit instruction and/or support in reading/literacy, math, written language, and social-emotional behavior and/or other disciplines as needed. Design and deliver culturally responsive and trauma informed instruction Progress monitor student mastery of IEP goals and objectives using various assessments and data collection tools. Complete academic assessments and write reports for SE evaluations. Co-teach as needed with lead classroom teachers and/or assistant teachers. Write the Individualized Education Programs for students based on various types of data specific to the student's present levels of functioning and performance. Provide instruction of students using systematic, structured, and multisensory approaches to learning. Collaborate with general education, special education, related services, and staff. Administer formal and informal assessments and analyze data to inform decisions regarding IEP goals/objective, learning approaches/content and support. Accommodate and modify for student learning and support the general education teacher with the implementation of appropriate accommodations in the general education setting. Any related duties as outlined by the Principal or Special Education Administrator(s). Ensure implementation of students' Individualized Education Plans. Ensure effective collaboration with families, community supports/services, related service staff, and general education teachers. Ensure effective instruction and support for students with disabilities.
Your Skill Set:
As the incoming Special Educator you will possess many, though perhaps not all, of the following characteristics and qualifications: Demonstrated ability to work directly with students with diverse needs: particularly co-regulation, relationship-building, and reasoning to support students' access to academic content. Broad knowledge and experience of programs and services specific to students' areas of eligibility (i.e. autism, academic, behavior, learning, etc.) Broad knowledge of state eligibility requirements Excellent collaboration skills Excellent skills in oral and written communication Demonstrated ability in collaborating and supporting parents and families Demonstrated ability to problem solve Demonstrated understanding of inclusive educational practices including various co-teaching approaches General knowledge of various formal and informal assessments to monitor student progress and skills General knowledge of state and federal special education guidelines and requirements Bachelors degree from an accredited college/university in Special Education required, masters preferred, concentration in learning disabilities preferred Massachusetts Certification of students with mild/moderate special needs required Specialized training/certification in a foundational reading program such as Orton-Gillingham or Wilson Reading Salaries are competitive with local districts and commensurate with experience.
