Job Description

MSAD 54 is seeking a dedicated, student-centered Alternative Education/Special Education Teacher to join our team. This position is ideal for an experienced educator who is passionate about supporting students with diverse learning needs while collaborating with colleagues and supervising a team of educational technicians to ensure students receive high-quality, individualized supports. The Special Education Alternative Education Teacher works with students who need a different approach to learning than what is typically offered in a traditional classroom. The successful candidate will bring strong knowledge of special education programming, compliance, and instructional practices while fostering positive relationships with students, families, and staff. At MSAD 54, we believe every student deserves a learning environment where they feel safe, welcome, and respected for who they are, and where they are supported to reach high academic standards while developing character and becoming lifelong learners. Supporting Students for Success Our special education teachers play a critical role in ensuring students receive the services and supports needed to succeed academically, socially, and emotionally. This role includes designing and implementing individualized programming while collaborating closely with general education teachers, related service providers, and families. Educators in MSAD 54 work within a collaborative culture that believes students learn best when they feel connected, supported, and engaged in their learning. Key Responsibilities Teach academic subjects based on state and district standards. Adjust instruction to meet each student's individual needs and learning style. Creative thinking on project-based learning. Build positive relationships with students and families. Provide support with organization, behavior, and social-emotional skills. Monitor student progress and communicate regularly with families and school staff. Work closely with counselors, special education staff, administrators, and community agencies. Maintain a calm, respectful, and consistent classroom environment. Encourage students to set goals and plan for life after high school. Qualifications Valid teaching certification, 282. Experience working with students who need additional academic or behavioral support is preferred. Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
