Management is seeking dedicated and qualified Exceptional Student Education (ESE) Teachers / Special Education Teachers for school-based opportunities supporting students within Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD). The ESE Teacher will provide specialized instruction and individualized support to students with disabilities. This position is ideal for an educator who is passionate about helping students succeed academically, socially, behaviorally, and developmentally while working collaboratively with school staff and families. This contract is for the 2026-2027 school year.
Responsibilities:
  • Provide individualized and small-group instruction based on student needs.
  • Implement and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
  • Deliver differentiated instruction appropriate to students' abilities and learning needs.
  • Modify curriculum, assignments, instructional materials, and assessments as needed.
  • Monitor and document student progress toward academic, behavioral, and IEP goals.
  • Participate in IEP meetings and contribute to the development and review of student goals.
  • Maintain required special education records and documentation.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers, paraprofessionals, administrators, families, and related-service providers.
  • Develop and maintain a structured, supportive, and inclusive classroom environment.
  • Implement positive classroom and behavior-management strategies.
  • Communicate student progress and concerns with appropriate school team members and families.
  • Follow school, district, state, and federal special education policies and procedures.
  • Participate in staff meetings, professional development, and other required school activities.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Valid Michigan teaching certificate, authorization, endorsements or eligibility for appropriate certification.
  • Required endorsements: Cognitive Impairment (CI), Emotional Impairment (EI), and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) population, when required.
  • Knowledge of IEP development, implementation, accommodations, modifications, and progress monitoring.
  • Strong classroom-management and communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary educational teams.
  • Commitment to supporting students with diverse learning, behavioral, and developmental needs.
