Job Description

Category Schools - Deaf / Hard of Hearing Specialist Job Type Contract Make a positive impact by supporting a growing elementary American Sign Language (ASL) program for the 2026-2027 school year. This contract opportunity is ideal for experienced educators passionate about Deaf/Hard of Hearing advocacy and committed to inclusive learning. You'll play a crucial role in helping elementary-level students develop their ASL skills and confidence, beginning with a small caseload that may expand as the program grows.
Key Qualifications:
Valid teaching certification in Deaf/Hard of Hearing or ASL instruction (state credentials preferred) Previous classroom experience teaching ASL to children, ideally at the elementary level Proficiency in American Sign Language, with a strong grasp of best practices for bilingual or language development methodologies Understanding of Deaf culture and the unique educational needs of Deaf/Hard of Hearing students Strong communication skills and a student-centered approach Adaptability to accommodate varied learning styles and evolving caseload
Primary Responsibilities:
Provide engaging, age-appropriate instruction in American Sign Language for one elementary student (with potential to serve more as the program enrolls additional students) Develop and implement individualized lesson plans to support language acquisition, comprehension, and fluency Collaborate with staff and families to create supportive, accessible learning environments Monitor student progress, assess skill development, and adjust instruction as needed Cultivate a respectful and inclusive classroom that values Deaf/Hard of Hearing identities Stay attuned to student needs, program expansion, and best practices in ASL education
