Job Description

Special Education Teacher / Educational Program LeadJob Overview Midwest Educational Services is seeking a passionate, driven, and highly capable Special Education Teacher who is excited by the opportunity to help lead and grow a specialized school environment for students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). This role is ideal for an ambitious educator who wants more than a traditional classroom position. We are looking for someone who can provide high-quality instruction, support students with diverse learning and behavioral needs, help shape classroom systems, and grow into a leadership role within the school. The Special Education Teacher will be responsible for creating a structured, safe, and supportive learning environment where students can make meaningful academic, behavioral, social-emotional, communication, and functional progress. This position requires strong instructional skills, leadership ability, professionalism, and the confidence to support students who may require intensive behavioral support, including students who need individualized or 1:1 assistance. The right candidate will be a builder — someone who wants to help develop a strong school culture, support staff, collaborate with families and service providers, and help create a program known for safety, structure, compassion, and high expectations. Duties and Responsibilities The Special Education Teacher / Educational Program Lead will: Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) based on each student's needs, goals, accommodations, modifications, and services. Provide specialized instruction in academic areas including literacy, math, communication, social skills, life skills, and functional skill development. Create structured, engaging, and individualized lesson plans that support student growth and align with IEP goals. Help establish classroom routines, behavior systems, documentation practices, and instructional expectations for the school. Use evidence-based behavioral strategies, positive behavior supports, prevention techniques, and de-escalation strategies to safely support students with behavioral needs. Lead by example in maintaining a calm, professional, safe, and respectful learning environment. Support students who may require close supervision, behavioral intervention, crisis-prevention strategies, or 1:1 support. Supervise and provide direction to paraprofessionals/direct support staff within the classroom. Collaborate with nurses, therapists, administrators, families, outside providers, and IEP team members to coordinate student support. Conduct assessments, collect data, track progress, and use student performance information to guide instruction and intervention. Maintain accurate documentation related to IEP goals, student progress, behavior plans, service minutes, parent communication, and required educational records. Assist with program development, school procedures, student intake, staff training, and quality improvement efforts. Participate in ongoing professional development related to special education, behavioral support, trauma-informed care, crisis prevention, classroom management, and instructional best practices. Help build a positive school culture where students are supported, staff are confident, and families feel informed and respected. Leadership Opportunity This position is designed for someone who has the ability and desire to grow into a larger leadership role as Midwest Educational Services expands. The ideal candidate will be interested in helping shape the school from the ground up, including classroom structure, staff expectations, instructional systems, behavior support practices, compliance processes, and long-term program growth. We are looking for a professional who can think beyond one classroom and help build a high-quality educational setting for students who need specialized support.
Qualifications Preferred qualifications include:
Current Special Education teaching endorsement or eligibility for Special Education endorsement. Experience working with students with disabilities, developmental delays, autism, behavioral needs, communication needs, or emotional/behavioral challenges. Strong knowledge of IEP development, special education compliance, accommodations, modifications, and progress monitoring. Experience implementing behavior support plans, de-escalation strategies, and positive behavior interventions. Ability to lead paraprofessionals and support staff in a professional and organized manner. Strong classroom management skills and the ability to maintain structure, safety, and consistency. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively with families, school districts, service providers, therapists, nurses, and internal leadership. Strong documentation skills and attention to detail. A desire to help build, lead, and grow a specialized educational environment. Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate is: A strong teacher and a natural leader. Calm under pressure and confident with behavioral situations. Organized, professional, and dependable. Compassionate but able to maintain structure and expectations. Comfortable working with students who require significant support. Excited to help build a school, not just work in one. Able to lead staff, communicate clearly, and model best practices. Passionate about helping students with IEPs grow academically, socially, behaviorally, and functionally.
