Full Job Description Title:
Special Education Teacher Job Summary:
Under the supervision of the Head Administrator, provides specialized instruction and support to students with disabilities by developing and implementing individualized, research-based educational programs aligned with students' Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). Creates an inclusive, supportive, and structured learning environment that promotes academic achievement, functional skills, independence, and social-emotional growth. Ensures compliance with federal, state, and school special education regulations while collaborating with staff, families, and ancillary service providers.
Qualifications:
Valid New Mexico teaching license or ability to acquire one. Priority is given to those with training in behavior management, IEP development, and inclusive practices.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Helps to develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in compliance with IDEA, New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) requirements, and school policies.
  • Provides specially designed instruction (SDI) tailored to meet the unique learning needs of students with disabilities across academic, behavioral, and functional domains.
  • Conducts ongoing progress monitoring and data collection to evaluate student performance and adjust instruction accordingly.
  • Participates in and facilitates IEP meetings, including development of goals, accommodations, modifications, and transition plans.
  • Ensures legal compliance and documentation, including timelines, service logs, progress reports, and evaluation procedures.
  • Collaborates with general education teachers to support inclusive practices, co-teaching, and accommodations within the general education setting.
  • Implements behavior intervention plans (BIPs) and utilizes positive behavior supports and trauma-informed practices.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and application of disability awareness, including characteristics of various disabilities (e.g., learning disabilities, autism, emotional disturbance, intellectual disabilities, etc.).
  • Provides differentiated instruction using evidence-based strategies to support diverse learners.
  • Coordinates and collaborates with related service providers (speech therapists, occupational therapists, counselors, etc.).
  • Communicates regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress, services, and supports.
  • Supports students in developing self-advocacy, social skills, and independence.
  • Administers and interprets formal and informal assessments as appropriate.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all student records in compliance with FERPA and IDEA.
