JOB DESCRIPTION
Serves as a liaison between area office special education staff and the young child with special needs by acting as an advocate for the developing young child with suspected special needs within the kindergarten environment through observation, identification, and appropriate intervention.

Incumbent must achieve the following outcomes with or without reasonable accommodation: Cooperates in the development and implementation of the District program of instruction. Plans and implement a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of students and complies with State Department of Education Standards and the APS Board of Education goals and objectives. Identifies students with suspected special education needs in compliance with Federal, State, and local laws and regulations. Observes, screens/assesses the kindergarten child with possible special needs. Communicates to appropriate school personnel the screening results and recommendation for possible intervention. Serves as a liaison and to provide appropriate support to area Early Childhood special education programs. Participates in a team diagnostic referral process for kindergarten children with suspected needs. Provides parents with information about and/or interventions for the kindergarten child with special needs when appropriate. Assists in the entry of the young child with special needs in the most appropriate placement. Participates in early childhood community and school based advocacy programs for the young child with special needs. Develops an appropriate assessment battery and procedure for the screening of the young child with suspected special needs. Provides appropriate materials and/or strategies to the kindergarten teacher of the child with special learning needs as time allows. Participates as a member of the District Diagnostic Center Early Childhood Special Education Team. Cooperates with staff and support personnel in assessing and helping students with health, attitude, learning, and behavioral problems. Performs other job related tasks as requested by the Coordinator of the District Diagnostic Center.
DUTIES :
In addition to the essential functions of this job, the incumbent must perform the following duties: Complies with state-approved Code of Ethics of the Education Profession and upholds and enforces rules, administrative directives and regulations, school board policies, and local, state and federal regulations. Articulates and facilitates the implementation of the mission and values of the Albuquerque Public Schools. Safeguards confidentiality of privileged information. Prepares and maintains accurate and complete records and reports as required by law, state directives, district policy and administrative regulations. Shares the responsibility for the supervision and care of district inventory, proper and safe use of facilities, equipment and supplies, and reports safety hazards promptly. Maintains professional relationships and works cooperatively with employees, the community and other professionals. Maintains professional competence through individual and staff training, in-service educational activities and self-selected professional growth activities. Attends and/or conducts staff meetings and participates on committees within area of responsibility. Performs other tasks related to area of responsibilities as requested or assigned by an immediate supervisor.
PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND EXPERIENCE
Effective communication skills, both verbal and written. Flexibility, organization, decision-making and problem solving skills. Interpersonal skills with diverse populations in-person and on the telephone. Knowledge of APS community, computer system, financial and legal requirements. Ability to meet deadlines, work on multiple projects and coordinate the work of others. Knowledge of word processing, database and spreadsheet software. Possess a valid Special Education certificate Knowledge of diagnostic/prescriptive methods and materials Demonstrated ability in the formulation of diagnostic prescriptive reports
REQUIREMENTS
Bachelors Degree Current New Mexico teaching certificate in early childhood, Birth - 3rd grade or special education PreK-12 New Mexico teaching license.
