Ł DITŁ'OOÍ School of Empowerment, Action & Perseverance (DEAP) is a Diné-centered public charter school located on the Navajo Nation in Navajo, New Mexico. DEAP exists to empower students through rigorous academics, cultural revitalization, land-based education, wellness, leadership, and service to community. AtDEAP, STEM
education is not separate from culture, land, or identity. Students engage in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through the lens of Diné values, environmental stewardship, problem solving, sustainability, and community responsibility. Our students are prepared for college, trade school, careers, entrepreneurship, and leadership within the Navajo Nation and beyond. Position Summary The STEM Teacher is responsible for delivering rigorous, engaging, and culturally responsive instruction in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics for middle and high school students. The teacher develops standards-based lessons that integrate project-based learning, Diné cultural relevance, real-world applications, and hands-on learning experiences. The STEM Teacher must believe that all students are capable of high achievement and must maintain high expectations for academics, professionalism, attendance, and behavior. This position requires collaboration, flexibility, innovation, and a commitment to both academic excellence and Diné educational sovereignty. The ideal candidate understands that DEAP is both a school of academic rigor and a school of cultural responsibility. Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesInstructional Responsibilities Deliver daily standards-aligned STEM instruction utilizing New Mexico academic standards and NGSS where applicable Create engaging project-based and inquiry-based learning experiences Integrate Diné culture, language, environmental knowledge, and land-based learning into STEM instruction Utilize hands-on learning, labs, technology integration, engineering design, and real-world problem solving Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners, including students with IEPs, 504 plans, English Learners, and gifted students Maintain lesson plans, pacing guides, grading, and assessment data aligned with school expectations Use student achievement data to drive instruction and interventions Prepare students for state assessments, college readiness, and career pathways Classroom Environment Establish a structured, safe, respectful, and academically focused classroom culture Build strong relationships with students rooted in K'é, respect, accountability, and belonging Maintain high expectations for attendance, participation, behavior, and academic performance Implement restorative and culturally responsive classroom management practices Ensure classroom and laboratory safety procedures are consistently followed Collaboration and Professional Responsibilities Collaborate with special education staff, instructional assistants, Diné educators, and administration Participate in PLC meetings, professional development, staff meetings, and school events Communicate professionally and consistently with families and guardians Maintain accurate and timely student records, grades, attendance, and compliance documentation Support school-wide initiatives, testing coordination, student exhibitions, and community events Model professionalism, positivity, and ethical conduct at all times Community and Cultural Engagement Support DEAP's mission of Diné language and cultural revitalization Participate in land-based learning opportunities, community projects, and cultural events Connect STEM instruction to Navajo Nation issues such as sustainability, water, agriculture, renewable energy, traditional ecological knowledge, and community development Serve as a positive representative of DEAP within the school and broader community QualificationsRequired Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, Education, or related field Valid New Mexico Teaching License OR ability to obtain licensure through NM PED Appropriate endorsement in mathematics, science, or related STEM field Strong classroom management and instructional skills Ability to work collaboratively in a mission-driven school environment Commitment to culturally responsive and equity-centered education Preferred Qualifications Experience working in Indigenous, Tribal, rural, or culturally diverse school settings Knowledge of Diné culture, language, and community values Experience with project-based learning, experiential learning, or outdoor education Experience teaching middle and/or high school students Experience integrating technology and STEM applications into instruction Bilingual English/Navajo proficiency Master's degree in education or related field Conditions of Employment Must pass all required state and federal background checks Must maintain valid NM licensure throughout employment Must comply with all DEAP policies, PED regulations, FERPA requirements, and Navajo Nation expectations Must attend required trainings, professional development, and school functions Regular on-site attendance is an essential function of this position Compensation and Benefits DEAP offers: Competitive salary based on NM PED licensure level and experience Charter salary supplement Medical, dental, and vision insurance NM Educational Retirement Board (ERB) participation Paid leave and holidays Professional development support STEM classroom materials and instructional support Eligibility for federal student loan forgiveness programs Application Requirements Interested applicants should submit: Cover letter Resume or curriculum vitae Copy of NM teaching license or proof of eligibility Three professional references Optional sample lesson plan or project overview Applications may be submitted to the Executive Director.
