Category Schools - Special Education Teacher Job Type Contract Step into a vital role shaping young lives as a Special Education Teacher specializing in intensive instruction for K-8 students with significant needs. This full-time, contract opportunity runs from August 3, 2026, through June 4, 2027, at a single-site elementary/middle school near Santa Fe, NM. You'll guide a close-knit classroom dedicated to supporting students who benefit from substantial educational, behavioral, and adaptive skill accommodations.
Key Qualifications & Experience:
Valid state special education teaching certification (or eligibility for licensure) Previous experience in self-contained or intensive needs classrooms strongly preferred Strong understanding of autism spectrum disorders, AAC devices, and individualized supports Proven ability to develop and implement structured routines and positive behavior support plans Comfortable leading, mentoring, and collaborating with classroom aides and related service providers Skilled in implementing communication, social skills, and academic interventions
Key Responsibilities:
Serve as Lead Teacher, overseeing 2-3 instructional aides in a highly structured K-8 classroom Manage a caseload of up to 10 students with severe disabilities requiring intensive supports Develop and modify lesson plans tailored to individual student needs in academics, communication, and adaptive skills Implement consistent routines and clear expectations, while fostering a caring and safe environment Utilize AAC technology and alternative communication strategies for students with limited verbal abilities Collaborate with families, therapists, and school teams to promote student growth and meaningful inclusion where possible Monitor progress, complete required IEP documentation, and adjust goals and supports as needed If you're a dedicated special education professional, passionate about creating supportive and structured learning environments for students with complex needs, your expertise is needed.
