POSITION SUMMARY
The Middle School Teacher provides trauma-informed, standards-aligned instruction to students in grades 6 through 8, with possible extension into grades 4 and 5, within a residential treatment setting. This role supports both general education and special education students in a non-public charter school environment located within a residential facility serving youth with emotional and behavioral needs. The Middle School Teacher is responsible for creating a safe, structured, and engaging classroom environment that supports students academically, behaviorally, and socially. This position collaborates closely with residential staff, therapists, administrators, families, and school districts to align academic programming with each student's treatment and educational goals. The teacher also supports compliance with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), Ohio Learning Standards, and applicable state and federal education regulations while promoting emotional regulation, positive behavior, and student growth. Current classroom size is approximately four students but may increase to up to ten students.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Instruction and Curriculum Plan and deliver standards-aligned lessons consistent with Ohio Learning Standards Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of students with IEPs, 504 Plans, RTI strategies, and varying academic abilities Create a classroom environment that promotes emotional safety, engagement, structure, and behavior regulation Utilize trauma-informed instructional practices and model self-regulation strategies Use a variety of instructional methods, interventions, and technologies to support student learning Maintain lesson plans at least one week in advance and prepare substitute plans as needed Assess student progress using formative and summative assessments and adjust instruction accordingly Support students in both in-person and digital learning environments Classroom and Behavior Management Implement positive behavior supports and classroom management strategies Maintain accurate records related to attendance, grades, IEP documentation, and incidents Promote a safe, structured, and supportive learning environment Respond to behavioral crises using CPI techniques and agency protocols Maintain appropriate classroom supervision and student accountability throughout the school day IEP Support and Compliance Support implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and accommodations Collaborate with Intervention Specialists and related staff to ensure compliance with IDEA and ODEW requirements Monitor student progress toward academic and behavioral goals Assist with documentation and communication related to educational services and accommodations Collaboration and Communication Collaborate with therapists, residential staff, paraprofessionals, administrators, and related service providers Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and student planning discussions Communicate regularly with families and school districts regarding student progress and educational needs Support continuity between educational programming and residential treatment goals Program Collaboration and Support Collaborate with residential and administrative staff to support program schedules and routines Participate in planning for special events and activities Support supervised opportunities for residents to engage in basic cooking and kitchen-related life skills Professional Responsibilities Maintain confidentiality in accordance with FERPA, HIPAA, and organizational policies Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and professional development opportunities Demonstrate professionalism, teamwork, and cultural competence Support the mission and values of Safely Home, Inc. through positive collaboration and student-centered practices
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Licensure:
Bachelor's degree in Education or related field required Valid Ohio teaching license preferred, including Middle Childhood Education (Grades 4-9) or Intervention Specialist licensure Ohio non-tax certificate may be accepted with appropriate experience and credentials Experience Minimum of 3 years of teaching, special education, or related educational experience preferred Experience working with students with behavioral or emotional needs preferred Experience with IEP implementation and educational compliance strongly preferred Experience in residential, therapeutic, or alternative educational settings is a plus Skills & Competencies Strong classroom management and instructional planning skills Knowledge of trauma-informed practices and positive behavior supports Strong communication, organization, and time management abilities Knowledge of IDEA, Section 504, and Ohio education regulations preferred Ability to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team Student-centered and solution-focused approach to education
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be at least 21 years of age Must pass a BCI/FBI background check and physical exam Possess a valid Ohio Drivers License Must maintain required Crisis Intervention Certification (eg, CPI) This is a 12-month, full-time, on-site position with some extended hours and local travel as needed
PHYSICAL AND WORK ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS
Must be able to walk, stand, bend, and kneel throughout the day Ability to lift up to 25 pounds and perform CPI physical interventions as needed Work primarily in a classroom within a youth residential treatment facility Occasional local travel for events, supplies, or educational opportunities may be required Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of classroom equipment up to 25 pounds Potential exposure to blood and bodily fluids
