A Special Education Teacher teaches students who have disabilities, and adapts teaching methods to meet the needs of students. Assesses students and helps to develop individualized education plans that specify the services and accommodations needed for each student. Works in a classroom that includes only students with IEPs, or works with students and teachers in regular classes. For students with severe disabilities, may focus on developing skills for independent living. Works as part of a team that includes therapists, school counselors or social workers.
High School Life Skills Program Position Summary We are seeking a dedicated Special Education Teacher to provide specialized instruction and case management services within a high school Life Skills program. The teacher will support students with significant cognitive, adaptive, and functional needs through individualized educational programming focused on academic, social-emotional, communication, vocational, functional, and independent living skills. Services are provided in accordance with federal, state, and local special education regulations and district policies. Responsibilities include case management, IEP development and implementation, collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, behavioral programming, transition planning, and supervision of support staff. This position may also encompass responsibilities associated with similar roles such as Process Coordinator, Academic Evaluator, Case Manager, or Teacher of Record, based on program needs. Essential Responsibilities Provide direct instruction using evidence-based practices within a Life Skills classroom setting. Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) to support student achievement and compliance requirements. Design and deliver instruction in functional academics, daily living skills, communication, social skills, vocational readiness, and community-based learning. Prepare and maintain required documentation, including IEPs, progress reports, meeting notices, prior written notices, and compliance-related records. Schedule, facilitate, and participate in IEP meetings. Monitor student progress through data collection and ongoing assessment. Develop and implement positive behavior support plans and behavior intervention strategies. Collaborate with related service providers, administrators, families, and community partners to support student success. Utilize assistive technology and adaptive equipment to promote student learning and independence. Supervise, train, and support paraprofessionals and other assigned support staff. Ensure compliance with all applicable special education laws, regulations, and district procedures. Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, transition planning, and problem-solving processes. Apply current research and best practices to instructional programming. Perform additional duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Valid Pennsylvania Special Education certification or eligibility for appropriate Pennsylvania licensure. Knowledge of special education laws, regulations, and compliance requirements. Experience developing and implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). Understanding of specialized curriculum, differentiated instruction, and individualized teaching methodologies. Experience utilizing educational technology, assistive technology, and adaptive equipment. Ability to establish and maintain collaborative relationships with students, families, administrators, and colleagues. Strong organizational, interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Preferred Qualifications Previous experience in a Life Skills, Multiple Disabilities, Autism Support, or Functional Skills program. Experience with transition planning for secondary students. Knowledge of vocational and community-based instructional programming. Experience supervising paraprofessionals or instructional support staff. Familiarity with behavior management techniques and positive behavior support practices.
