This is a part-time position with the option of transitioning to full-time, designed for an educator who possesses strong writing skills and is a certified English teacher. Target Student Population:
Diverse young men in grades 6-12, including students reading and writing 1-3 years below grade level. Key Responsibilities and Pedagogical Expectations 1. Accelerated Literacy & Writing Instruction Implement a rigorous, engaging, and highly scaffolded writing curriculum that targets mechanics, sentence structure, essay composition, and critical thinking. Utilize evidence-based writing methodologies—such as the Writing Workshop model, cognitive strategy instruction, and self-regulation development—to support students who are 1-3 years behind. Balance the explicit teaching of writing conventions (spelling, grammar, and paragraphing) with high-leverage ideation and self-regulation strategies. Prepare all students for the demands of college-level writing, focusing on expository, argumentative, analytical, and research-based essays. 2. Cultivating a Community of Writers Act as a writing mentor by maintaining an active writer's notebook and sharing your own writing process, drafts, and revisions with students to "show, not tell." Establish a safe, kind, and trusting classroom environment that fosters a collaborative "community of practice," encouraging students to take creative risks and write with authentic voice. Introduce diverse, modern, and high-interest mentor texts to capture students' interests, spark critical thinking, and inspire original compositions. 3. Individualized Intervention & Feedback Conduct regular, utilize digital feedback tools (e.g., Google Docs) to provide actionable, voice-preserving feedback. Differentiate instruction to accommodate diverse learning styles, cultural backgrounds, and varying entry-level writing abilities. Monitor, track, and analyze student writing growth over time, adjusting instructional interventions to ensure every student reaches or exceeds grade-level college readiness benchmarks. 4. Institutional & Collaborative Duties Collaborate with humanities and science faculty to integrate writing across the curriculum. Participate in professional development, including training offered by The Nativity Miguel Network. Serve as an academic advisor, coach, or arts facilitator depending on background and skills.
Required Qualifications & Experience Education:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is required; a Master's degree in English, Creative Writing, or Secondary Education is highly preferred.
Certification:
Valid state teaching certification in English/Language Arts (Secondary Education, Grades 7-12).
Writing Expertise:
Exceptional personal writing skills with a deep understanding of the cognitive and social complexities of the writing process.
Instructional Experience:
Proven track record of successfully teaching diverse student populations and implementing reading/writing interventions for struggling learners.
