JOB SUMMARY
The Berkley School District is seeking a dedicated and student-centered Special Education Teacher to support elementary students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The successful candidate will provide specialized instruction, behavioral support, and social-emotional learning opportunities in accordance with each student's Individualized Education Program (IEP). This position requires collaboration with families, general education staff, related service providers, and district support personnel to ensure students achieve meaningful academic, behavioral, communication, and functional outcomes.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Special Education, Education, or a related field. Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with a Special Education endorsement. Knowledge of child development, including language, communication, social-emotional, and cognitive development. Strong interpersonal, organizational, oral, and written communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively with students, families, and multidisciplinary teams. Preferred Qualifications Autism Spectrum Disorder (SV) endorsement. Previous experience teaching students with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Knowledge of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) principles and behavioral intervention strategies. Experience implementing evidence-based instructional practices for students with
ASD. START
training or willingness to obtain START-related professional development.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Instruction and Student Support Provide individualized and small-group instruction aligned to Michigan Academic Standards and each student's IEP. Develop and implement instructional strategies that support academic achievement, communication, social-emotional development, independence, and life skills. Create a structured, supportive, and inclusive learning environment that promotes student engagement and success. Differentiate instruction to meet the unique learning needs of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Utilize evidence-based practices and behavioral intervention strategies to support student learning and positive behavior. IEP Development and Compliance Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in compliance with federal, state, and district requirements. Conduct ongoing progress monitoring and maintain accurate documentation of student growth toward IEP goals and objectives. Participate in IEP Team meetings, evaluations, and other required special education processes. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to assess student needs and develop appropriate supports and services. Behavioral and Social-Emotional Support Implement positive behavior support plans and behavioral intervention strategies. Support students in developing self-regulation, communication, social interaction, and problem-solving skills. Monitor and document student behavior and progress across instructional and non-instructional settings. Foster student independence and responsible decision-making. Family and Team Collaboration Collaborate effectively with parents, caregivers, teachers, related service providers, paraprofessionals, and administrators. Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress, programming, and available resources. Support family engagement by providing guidance, resources, and opportunities for involvement in their child's educational program. Participate as an active member of the school's ASD and special education teams. Professional Responsibilities Prepare lesson plans, instructional materials, assessments, and classroom resources. Maintain compliance with district, state, and federal regulations regarding special education programming and documentation. Participate in professional learning opportunities related to autism, special education, and instructional best practices. Perform other duties as assigned by the building principal or designee.
