A Special Education Teacher teaches students who have disabilities, and adapts teaching methods to meet the needs of students. Assesses students and helps to develop individualized education plans that specify the services and accommodations needed for each student. Works in a classroom that includes only students with IEPs, or works with students and teachers in regular classes. For students with severe disabilities, may focus on developing skills for independent living. Works as part of a team that includes therapists, school counselors or social workers.

At APPLE Academy, a local NPA (Non-Public Agency) you'll work with a small, diverse group of students (K-6) with autism and related developmental differences—many of whom require highly individualized instruction, behavioral support, and flexible teaching approaches . You'll have the structure, staffing, and support to do this work well. About the Role As a Special Education Teacher, your primary responsibility is to design, plan, and oversee instruction —with most lessons implemented by Paraeducators/CBTs under your direction.
You will:
Plan differentiated lessons across multiple grade levels and ability levels Prepare materials, visuals, and instructional systems ahead of time Provide clear direction and expectations to staff Supervise and coach CBTs to ensure high-quality implementation Step in for direct teaching as needed while maintaining oversight of the full classroom You'll partner closely with a BCBA in a model designed to support student independence and eventual transition to less restrictive environments .
What You'll Do:
Instructional Design & Planning (Primary Focus) Develop daily/weekly lesson plans differentiated across K-6 levels Create structured materials and supports in advance (visuals, schedules, task systems) Translate IEP goals into clear, implementable teaching plans Ensure programming addresses academic, behavioral, social-emotional, and functional skills Team Leadership & Supervision (Core of Role) Direct and supervise Paraeducators/CBTs as primary lesson implementers Provide real-time coaching, modeling, and feedback Ensure consistency and fidelity of implementation across staff Adjust plans based on both student progress and staff performance Classroom & Student Support Oversee the daily flow of instruction and transitions Work within a classroom serving students with diverse needs and profiles (K-6) Support students who may demonstrate: Behavioral challenges (especially during transitions or new demands) Communication differences Varying academic and functional skill levels Step in to support or model when needed while maintaining leadership role Data & Compliance Review and analyze student data collected by staff Adjust instruction based on progress and responsiveness Lead IEP development, updates, and meetings Ensure compliance with IDEA, FERPA, and district expectations Realistic Job Preview This is a highly rewarding and highly demanding role .
