POSITION DESCRIPTION
Under the supervision of the Dean of Adult Education and the Assistant Dean of Adult Education, the Part-Time Instructor substitute instructor is responsible for imparting classes, implementing, and designing curriculum-based activities for the IDPL English language program initiatives, including ESL, EL Civics, English Literacy, and first language literacy classes. The substitute will work a minimum of 4 hours per month for training and support, plus available substitutions as needed.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Prepares and presents material for program classes according to curriculum guidelines. Regularly evaluates student progress utilizing quizzes, exams, performance portfolios, or other type of qualitative or quantitative evaluation. Designs, writes, administers, and grades exams, quizzes, and other forms of student evaluation. Prepares syllabus documents as requested, including syllabus writing for the department and curriculum writing for other staff. Is present for a minimum of 95% of scheduled classes. Motivates students to attend class, as measured by an acceptable rate of attendance and retention. Receives positive and acceptable student feedback in evaluations conducted twice annually. Keeps accurate attendance records in two forms, a daily sign-in sheet for participants and a classroom record. Demonstrates ability to work in a team with colleagues. Exhibits professional courtesy in dealing with program participants, colleagues, and team members, and the public. Shows enthusiasm to teach, understands and applies current best-practices in classroom techniques and materials. Is able to provide instruction in morning and evening schedule on the same day Stays up to date by attending professional development on an ongoing basis, no less than four hours every six months. Attends civic events in support of the school and the community.
QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION B.A.
in language, math, subject area or education; 1 year classroom experience teaching adults Previous Syllabus Document and Lesson plan writing as instructor Excellent oral and written communication skills, Bilingual Spanish English preferred Experience working with a membership or volunteer environment preferred, nonprofit organization ideal. Ability to maintain a high sense of confidentiality Able to work with a wide variety of people Exceptional organization and time management skills Above average "customer" service approach Ability to maintain composure under pressure. PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Nature of work requires an ability to stand for long periods of time, speak during presentations in front of groups, and operate standard business office equipment. Requires ability to communicate and exchange information, collect, compile and prepare work documents, set-up and maintain work files.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Majority of work performed in a general classroom and office environment. Position requires availability for extended hours plus non-traditional hours required to perform job duties. Also requires participation and attendance at organization sponsored events and meetings.
