Job Description:
The Early Childhood and Elementary Permanent Building Substitute serves as a versatile, full-time educator assigned to a single elementary school for the duration of the academic year. This role ensures instructional continuity and operational support by providing high-quality classroom management and instruction in the absence of regular staff. When all staff are present, the Building Substitute supports school-wide operations and student interventions to maintain a seamless educational experience.
Essential Job Functions:
Report to the building daily at the designated staff start time, regardless of whether a specific absence has been pre-assigned. Maintain established classroom routines and expectations to minimize instructional disruption. Foster a safe, inclusive, and respectful learning environment aligned with the school's behavioral frameworks. Implement teacher substitute plans effectively while utilizing classroom technology to ensure continuity of instruction. Execute prepared lesson plans across all elementary subject areas assigned within the building. Adhere to attendance procedures to ensure accurate record-keeping. Collaborate with specialists and support staff to meet the specific needs of students. Provide detailed "End of Day" reports for the permanent teacher summarizing curriculum progress and notable student behavior. Differentiate teaching methods to meet diverse student needs, including those with IEPs or 504 plans. Provide "push-in" support when not covering a full class, assisting lead teachers with reading or math intervention groups and other assigned duties. Actively supervise students during non-instructional periods, including arrival, recess, lunch, and dismissal. Assume long-term coverage for teachers on extended leaves of absence as assigned. Promptly communicate student concerns or safety issues to the Principal. Perform all other tasks as assigned by the Building Principal.
Skills and Qualifications:
Possession of a Bachelor's Degree. Valid Massachusetts DESE Teaching License (Pre-K-2 or 1-6). Strong ability to follow and interpret written and verbal instructions. Knowledge of the Massachusetts State Frameworks and elementary learning expectations. High level of flexibility, adaptability, and emotional intelligence. Ability to remain physically active throughout the day, including standing for extended periods and transitioning between classrooms and outdoor areas.
