Job Description

St. Mark's School seeks candidates for the position of On-Call Substitute Teacher across all academic disciplines. We welcome applications from educators, professionals, graduate students, retirees, and others who enjoy working with adolescents in a dynamic school environment. Substitute teachers provide coverage for faculty absences on an as-needed basis. While occasional longer-term assignments may arise, most opportunities involve full- or partial-day coverage for one or two days at a time. This is an hourly, part-time position reporting to the Dean of Faculty. The current pay rate is $25 per hour. St. Mark's School is a coeducational boarding and day school committed to academic excellence, character development, and fostering a vibrant and inclusive community. Successful substitute teachers contribute to a positive learning environment while supporting students and faculty with professionalism, flexibility, and care.
Responsibilities include:
Following lesson plans and instructions provided by the classroom teacher. Supervising classroom activities and maintaining an orderly, productive learning environment. Supporting student engagement and learning throughout the school day. Promoting respectful interactions and upholding school expectations. Communicating effectively with students, faculty, and administrators regarding classroom activities and any concerns that arise. Providing appropriate supervision during assigned duties and transitions.
Qualifications and Desired Attributes:
Enthusiasm for working with adolescent students in a variety of settings. Strong classroom management, organizational, and time-management skills. Excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills. Ability to adapt quickly and confidently to new classroom environments. Commitment to fostering an inclusive community and supporting students from diverse backgrounds and experiences. Proficiency with Google Workspace applications, including Docs, Slides, and Sheets. Prior teaching, coaching, mentoring, youth-development, or classroom experience is preferred but not required.
