Definition:
The role of the Building-Based Substitute Teacher is to maintain and carry on the classroom procedures as if he/she were the regular teacher when a teacher is unavailable. The Building-Based Substitute Teacher will maintain the same responsibilities and the same duties as the regular teacher. Other responsibilities may include bus duty, playground supervision, lunch coverage, hallway/bathroom coverage, if no teaching coverage is needed. In the absence of the teacher, provide students with appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth while following any lesson plans and/or instructions left by the classroom teacher. Enable students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully.
Essential Functions:
The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as an illustration of the various types of work that may be performed. Assigned to rotate into various teaching positions in the school on a daily basis and possibly throughout the day. Implement teacher lesson plans and administrator directives with fidelity and efficiency. Communicate with classroom teachers and if necessary principal regarding expectations for student work, behavior and lesson execution. Ensure the physical and emotional safety of all students. Ensure the teacher's absence does not cause an interruption in classroom instruction. Gain familiarity with district curriculum and resources. Attend and contribute in staff meetings and professional development activities, if asked. Perform supervisory duties as assigned (such as lunch, bus, or recess duty). Abide by state statutes, school committee policies and district regulations. Attend meetings and perform duties as assigned by the principal or their designee. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities. Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy and administrative regulation. Report all suspicions of abuse and/or neglect to the principal. Maintain confidentiality regarding students and staff personnel information. Be a positive role model for students, support the mission of the Department. Ability to be flexible with job assignments as needed. Remain current on instructional practices in education (e.g. instructional technology) Assumes responsibility for other duties and responsibilities that may be assigned.
