BOARD SUBSTITUTE TEACHER
(LONG-TERM) Japanese Language 2-Sections, 3 days per week, Fall 2026 The position will start on August 24, 2026, through the end of quarter (1) of the 2026-27 academic school year. Quarter (1) ends on October 20. Lesson plans will be provided. The daily class rate for this position will be equivalent to the daily class rate of the first year of experience of degree status on the teacher scale. Maggie L. Walker Governor's School for Government and International Studies is a regional magnet program for gifted high school students. Board Substitute teachers (long-term) at MLWGS are responsible for providing classroom coverage for a teacher absent for an extended period. The long-term substitute works the regular hours of the absent classroom teacher during their absence.
Primary Responsibilities:
Teaches content in subject areas utilizing curriculum designated by Maggie L. Walker Governor's School and other appropriate learning activities. Instruct students in basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of Maggie L. Walker Governor's School. May develop lesson plans and supplementary materials compatible with the school's instructional philosophy and congruent with course/SOL standards; provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student and/or subgroups of students. Evaluate the academic and social growth of students, and keep appropriate records to include attendance reports, checklists, census forms, and other recordkeeping activities as necessary. Evaluates each student's progress in meeting the course standards. Maintains a safe and orderly classroom environment. Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve learning, health, and attitude problems. Communicates with parents and school counselors on student progress. Administers testing in accordance with school testing practices. Model nondiscriminatory practices in all activities. Completes other duties as assigned.
Qualification Requirements:

Education and Experience:
Bachelor's Degree required. Preference is given to those eligible for, or in possession of, an appropriate Virginia Teaching License in the subject area. Possesses familiarity with the subject(s) being taught. Demonstrate some knowledge of the principles and methodologies of effective teaching. Must possess the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
The "board substitute" will be a fully licensed teacher whenever possible.
Physical Demands:
Position involves sitting and/or standing most of the time in a classroom setting; exerting up to 10 pounds occasionally. Occasional stooping, crouching, pushing, pulling, carrying, and repetitive motion. Frequent reaching, standing, walking, lifting, and grasping. Constant talking, hearing, and viewing various types of close visual work. Work Environment:
The noise level will vary depending on daily activity. It, at times, is very quiet in the classroom but often, as in the cafeteria and/or school assemblies, is moderate to very loud. The employee must meet deadlines and must report to class and/or duty assignments on time. The work environment includes inside and outside areas. The work environment includes exposure to sunlight, risk of being bitten by animals or insects; exposure to environmental allergens (grass, weeds, pollen, and trees), and occasional exposure to solvents, degreasers, pesticides, and/or herbicides. The employee may be exposed to CRT's. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reports to:
Executive Director Salary will be pro-rated for the number of days worked.
