Aug 17, 2026 Job Description The Barre Unified Union School District is seeking a Permanent Substitute to support our PreK teaching staff for the 26/27 school year, working with students at Barre Town Middle & Elementary School. The rate of pay for this position is $18.00 per hour. We also offer a benefits package (Health Insurance, sick time, and personal time). Permanent substitutes are full-time school year employees and report to school every day, which is different from a typical substitute position.
POSITION GOAL
To ensure every student is able to pursue their education as seamlessly as possible during the absence of a classroom teacher. Our goal is to provide an educational environment where the students are the focus and center of attention.
CORE/PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
(Other duties may be assigned): Receives daily placement from the substitute coordinator. Review all plans and schedules to be followed during the teaching day. Maintains established routines and procedures of the school and classroom to which assigned. Teaches the lesson outlined and described in the Substitute Plans as prepared by the absent teacher. Assumes responsibility for overseeing student behavior during times when under substitute supervision. Completes reports on the day's activities at the conclusion of each teaching day/period/block. Follows policies, rules, and procedures to which regular teachers are subject with good teaching practice. Performs other duties as assigned when not assigned to a classroom. Other duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Assisting in the classroom, library/learning center, or other instructional setting. Supervising students in areas outside of the classroom. Supervising a study hall, in-school suspensions, etc. Performing basic clerical duties for the schools' administrative support staff. Monitoring students in the hallways/lobby and in high traffic and gathering places. Providing one-on-one academic support to students. Substituting in classrooms and covering lunch/work breaks as needed.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Previous experience working with prek children and early education training/education preferred. Applicants that have not education in early childhood education will be required to take a child development course offered through the local community college within 1 year of hire as required by the Vermont Child Development Division.
