HCS Instructional Assistant - OSR Pre-K Huntsville, AL $16.33+/hr Part-time / On-Demand (school calendar-based) We usually respond within a day About this role Huntsville City Schools is seeking a dedicated and compassionate PreK Instructional Aide to join the HCS Instructional Assistant - OSR Pre-K team. In this role, you will assist the teacher with the school readiness program for Pre-K students, helping to create a classroom climate that assures individualized learning and supports diversity, curiosity, and self-regulation. The children in the Pre-K programs play, create, explore, learn, and succeed — and you'll be a key part of making that happen every single day. The Pre-K programs at Huntsville City Schools are aligned to meet and exceed the ten Quality Indicator Benchmarks as defined by the National Institute for Early Education Research (NIEER), and the curriculum used is research-based and aligned with state and national standards. As an Instructional Aide, you will work directly alongside certified teachers to deliver high-quality early childhood education in a structured, nurturing, and engaging environment. This position is ideal for individuals who are passionate about early childhood development and are committed to helping young learners build the foundational skills they need for lifelong success. This position reports to the principal and/or assigned teacher, librarian, or area specialist. Professional appearance and communication are expected at all times, and appropriate professional attire is required. Candidates must complete required state and district credentialing prior to beginning work, including background check and mandatory training programs. A Day in the Life Your day begins as students arrive — greeting each child warmly and helping them transition into the classroom environment with confidence and comfort. Throughout the morning, you'll work side-by-side with the lead teacher to facilitate small group activities, support hands-on learning centers, and guide students through literacy, math, and social-emotional learning exercises tailored to Pre-K developmental milestones. You'll observe and document student behavior and progress, assist with classroom management, and ensure that every child feels seen, safe, and supported. During snack and lunch times, you'll supervise students and reinforce healthy habits and social skills. Afternoon routines may include creative play, story time, and preparing students for dismissal. Success in this role looks like a classroom where every child is engaged, every need is met, and the lead teacher feels fully supported — allowing the team to deliver the highest quality early education experience possible. Responsibilities Assist the lead teacher in implementing the school readiness curriculum aligned with NIEER Quality Indicator Benchmarks and state and national standards. Support individualized learning activities that address the diverse developmental needs, learning styles, and abilities of Pre-K students. Facilitate small group instruction, learning centers, and hands-on activities that promote curiosity, creativity, and self-regulation. Monitor and supervise students during classroom activities, transitions, meals, and outdoor play to ensure a safe and structured environment. Observe student behavior and development, documenting progress and communicating relevant observations to the lead teacher. Assist in preparing and organizing classroom materials, instructional resources, and learning environments to support daily lesson plans. Foster positive relationships with students and families, maintaining a welcoming and inclusive classroom atmosphere. Maintain professional appearance and communication standards consistent with Huntsville City Schools expectations at all times. Requirements Required ! Completion of Jason Flatt Act Training (suicide prevention awareness training for school personnel). ! Completion of Erin's Law Online Training (child sexual abuse prevention education). ! Successful completion of an ALSDE (Alabama State Department of Education) Background Check. ! High school diploma or equivalent (GED). ! Ability to work professionally and collaboratively within a school environment under the direction of a certified teacher or administrator. ! Strong interpersonal and communication skills appropriate for working with young children, families, and school staff. Preferred Associate's degree or coursework in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or a related field. Previous experience working with Pre-K or early childhood-aged children in a school, childcare, or educational setting. Familiarity with early childhood development principles, play-based learning strategies, or research-based Pre-K curricula. CPR and First Aid certification or willingness to obtain.
