Job Summary:
The Substitute Teacher/Aide provides instructional and supervisory support in the absence of a regular classroom teacher, instructional aide, or other assigned staff member. The substitute is responsible for maintaining a safe, orderly, and productive learning environment while implementing lesson plans, supervising students, supporting school operations, and ensuring continuity of instruction and student services. Substitute personnel serve as representatives of Madison City Schools and are expected to demonstrate professionalism, flexibility, sound judgment, and positive relationships with students, staff, and parents.
Qualifications
Required
Valid Alabama Teacher Certificate; or
Valid Alabama Substitute Teacher License
Ability to successfully pass all required state and federal background checks in accordance with Alabama law.
Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form.
Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with students, staff, parents, and administrators.
Ability to follow written lesson plans, schedules, and directives with minimal supervision.
Such alternative to the above qualifications as the Board may require.
Preferred
Previous experience working with children in educational settings.
Knowledge of classroom management techniques.
Experience utilizing educational technology and instructional resources.
Reports to: Principal and Permanent Sub
Background Check Required:
(Ala. Code §§ 16-22a-5) Upon offer of employment, employees will be required to submit legible fingerprints for a background review by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Background checks may not be more than ten (10) years old. A new background check is required for anyone new to Madison City Schools, regardless of the recency of the ABI and FBI background checks.
Student Safety and Security:
Madison City Schools prioritizes a safe, respectful, and supportive learning environment. Employees are expected to model professional conduct, maintain clear and appropriate boundaries with students, use district-approved channels for communications, and avoid interactions that could be perceived as favoritism, grooming, or undue familiarity. Staff must promptly report suspected child abuse or neglect to law enforcement authorities as required by Alabama law. Compliance with these expectations is a condition of employment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Instructional Responsibilities
Implement lesson plans and instructional activities prepared by the regular teacher.
Maintain continuity of instruction and classroom routines.
Facilitate learning activities in accordance with curriculum objectives and teacher expectations.
Provide academic assistance and guidance to students as needed.
Monitor student participation, engagement, and completion of assignments.
Maintain accurate attendance and classroom records as directed.
Leave detailed notes regarding lesson completion, student progress, and classroom activities for the regular teacher.
Classroom Management and Student Supervision
Maintain a safe, orderly, and respectful learning environment.
Establish and enforce appropriate classroom expectations consistent with school and district policies.
Supervise students in classrooms, hallways, cafeterias, playgrounds, and other assigned locations.
Monitor student behavior and address minor disciplinary concerns using appropriate interventions.
Refer significant behavioral concerns to administration according to school procedures.
Ensure students are appropriately supervised at all times and are never left unattended.
Escort students to specials, lunch, assemblies, and other activities as required.
Substitute Aide Responsibilities
Assist teachers and school staff with instructional and non-instructional duties.
Provide support to individual students or small groups.
Assist with classroom organization, preparation of materials, and learning activities.
Support students with academic, behavioral, or functional needs under staff direction.
Assist with student supervision during transitions, lunch, recess, and school activities.
Perform clerical and organizational tasks as assigned.
School Operations and Support
Follow daily schedules, bell schedules, and special event procedures.
Perform assigned supervisory duties, including hall duty and lunch supervision when required.
Assist with classroom setup, organization, and housekeeping.
Use instructional materials, technology, and equipment appropriately and safely.
Maintain classroom resources and return materials in an organized condition.
Adapt to changing assignments, schedules, grade levels, and instructional settings.
Safety and Student Welfare Responsibilities
Follow all district and school emergency procedures, including fire, severe weather, lockdown, and secure perimeter protocols.
Review emergency procedures posted in each assigned classroom.
Maintain accountability for students during drills and emergencies.
Immediately report accidents, injuries, safety concerns, or unusual incidents to administration.
Maintain awareness of student medical alerts and health concerns communicated by school personnel.
Never administer medication to students.
Follow all district procedures regarding student release, transportation changes, and visitor interactions.
Protect students from unsafe conditions and immediately notify appropriate personnel of concerns.
Professional Responsibilities
Report to assigned schools on time and prepared for duty.
Maintain professional appearance and conduct at all times.
Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability in accepting assignments and changes in responsibilities.
Maintain confidentiality of all student, employee, and district information.
Comply with all Board policies, administrative procedures, state laws, and school regulations.
Demonstrate professionalism, courtesy, and respect in all interactions.
Utilize sound judgment and ethical decision-making.
Refrain from discussing confidential student or personnel matters outside authorized channels.
Support the mission, goals, and expectations of Madison City Schools.
Technology Responsibilities
Utilize district-approved technology systems and software appropriately.
Follow district guidelines regarding technology use and security.
Protect confidential information accessed through district systems.
Ensure students use technology only as authorized by the teacher's lesson plans and school procedures.
Comply with all district policies regarding electronic communication devices and technology resources.
Terms of Employment
Employment is on an as-needed basis and subject to district staffing needs, availability of assignments, successful completion of all required documentation, background checks, and compliance with Board policies and procedures.

According to established Board policies and administrative procedures and guidelines.
