SYLACAUGA CITY SCHOOLS
Position Description Title:
Instructional Assistant Reports To:
Principal and Assigned Teacher(s)
Job Goal:
To increase the effectiveness of the teacher and assist with individual students or small groups to help them achieve the skill levels of the class as a whole.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Relieve teacher of non-teaching responsibilities. 2. Participate in in-service training programs. 3. Alert the teacher to any problem or special information about an individual student. 4. Perform clerical work required, i.e., taking attendance, checking out library books, audio-visual equipment, collecting lunch money and tickets, and any other routine book work. 5. Assist teacher with lunchroom, bathroom, playground activities and bus duty as well as field trips. 6. Operate and care for equipment used in classroom instruction and inform principal if equipment is not working properly. 7. Assist teacher with emergency drills. 8. Assist teacher in collecting and distributing books and materials for the classroom. 9. Work with bulletin boards and other classroom displays. 10. Perform other related tasks as assigned. 11. Maintains the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as is expected of fully licensed teachers. 12. Assist in administering and scoring of assessment and diagnostic tests for individuals and small groups (K-6). 13. Assist any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teacher. 14. Follow a daily schedule as assigned by teacher(s) and approved by principal.
Qualifications:
Must meet State Department of Education Highly Qualified Standards by having an Associates Degree or a minimum of 2 full years of junior college or, pass the WorkKeys Assessment for Paraprofessionals. Must be able to work well with youth.
