Assistant Instructor, Fire Science Salary:
$16.16 per hour
Summary of Function:
Assist Instructors with lectures, skills, and administration for the Fire Programs.
Typical Duties:
Serves Students. Assist the instructor in the daily operation of the program, including assisting in lectures, project management, data entry, and assignment of reinforcement work for students. Set up and break down equipment for use during practical skills training. Assist and support in the instruction of skills in accordance with the educational standards and the course syllabi, through both lectures and practical hands-on education. Courses may include theory, practical application, skills training, or live scenarios. Participates in educational and recruitment activities of the Public Safety Institute. Support and participate in strategic initiatives and perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
Certified Firefighter
I & II, OR
Successful completion of the
Arizona Western College Fire Academy Additional Eligibility Requirements:
Successfully complete Arizona Fire Instructor I within two years of initial employment and submit certification Arizona Driver's License or Equivalent Preferred, not required: Certified and in good standing with the National Registry or AZDHS as an EMT or Paramedic; Arizona Fire Instructor II or Instructional Methodologies certified

Non-Exempt Position Type & Work Schedule:
Part-time Up to 19 hours per week Work flexible schedule to meet the program, department, and/or institutional needs, which may include Fridays, nights, and/or weekends
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of and ability to interpret, apply, and follow college policies and procedures Knowledge of or ability to maintain organizational structure, workflow and operating procedures Skill in current technologies and word processing, databases, presentation, and spreadsheet software, specifically Microsoft Office applications, Windows, college system platforms, software and applications especially those specific to the department operations Skill and ability to be self-directed and to manage one's own time Ability to complete all departmental and/or institutional mandatory training or development Ability to organize, prioritize, follow multiple projects and tasks through to completion, with close attention to detail Ability to work independently and contribute to a collaborative team environment Ability to provide assistance in a professional and supportive manner Ability to communicate effectively, verbally, in writing, and in a public setting, and to relate to others in a professional manner Ability to maintain confidentiality of protected information and follow FERPA and privacy guidelines Ability to demonstrate integrity, professionalism, and civility in all job-related actions Ability to analyze problems, identify solutions, and take appropriate actions to resolve problems using independent judgment and decision-making processes Ability to support instruction for and perform Firefighter I & II procedures Ability to support instruction for and perform Firefighter I & II skills Ability to be self-directed Ability to establish and maintain positive, effective, and collaborative relationships with individuals at all levels of the organization, students, and the public
Work Environment:
Indoor classroom setting with normal noise and lighting levels Work is performed in an open classroom environment with staff, students, and community contact and interruptions Working environment may include various locations across the service district, with varying noise levels, indoor and/or outdoor hands-on training as needed to support program, department, or institutional needs Potential for teaching in dark environments Potential for teaching in loud noise Potential for teaching in high temperatures
Physical Demands:
Must be able to perform and demonstrate all course skill requirements i.e., tool hoisting Lift and carry all lab equipment Move classroom furniture to properly set up a classroom for lecture and/or hands-on skills
Travel:
Required to travel to other locations using various modes of private, commercial, or fleet transportation, and as needed to support program, department, and institutional needs

Instructors may teach at any of the following locations: Yuma Fire Department Station 5 Classroom, Yuma Public Safety Training Facility, City of San Luis Fire Department, Somerton/Cocopah Fire Department, Wellton Fire Department, and other locations as needed to support the program.
