Job Description
Upward Bound Study Center is a 501(c)(3) non-profit education organization in Monterey Park that has served new immigrants in San Gabriel Valley through education and community formation since 1990. We strive to empower the community by providing its members with a place to learn, relate, and dream together. We are seeking a part-time volunteer teaching assistant to aid with the learning of our students in order to foster growth, respect, and the attainment of basic English skills necessary to live in the United States. Responsibilities include Working with the teacher in order to assist in the lesson, which may include filling in for the teacher when he or she is unavailable Working one-on-one with students who may need additional help both during and after classes Assisting the teacher in observing and monitoring the progress of individual students Keeping students safe and taking necessary precautions to ensure their safety and the safety of the center Supporting an engaging learning environment with both the teachers and the students The applicant must be able to perform work in a classroom setting. While it is optional to accompany students on field trips off site, applicants who are able to do so are preferred along with applicants who are able to speak Mandarin Chinese. Work will require mobility of arms to reach and grasp and manipulate small objects, such as common office machines; requires vision to read small print; and mobility to stand, walk, reach, bend, and lift books, supplies, and packages which do not exceed 30 pounds.
