Essential Elements:
BASIC FUNCTION
Under direction of an assigned supervisor, assists Special Education teachers by performing a variety of instructional, clerical and manual duties in working with elementary and secondary special education students; performs other related work as required.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
1. Provides instruction to special education students as directed by the teachers to individuals or small groups in reading, language arts, mathematics, and other subjects. 2. Assists the teacher in supervising students during classroom activities; physical exercise periods, field trips, art projects, special events and various other activities as directed. 3. Confers, as needed, with teachers to meet student needs. 4. Assists teachers by making telephone calls and attending parent-teacher conferences and meetings. 5. Performs a variety of clerical duties including, but not limited to, duplicating, filing and maintaining various records and reports. 6. Operates various classroom office equipment including, but not limited to, computers, typewriters, telephones and copiers. 7. Assists in the loading and unloading of students from buses; assists students to classrooms and other locations and events. 8. Assists students with personal hygiene, as necessary. 9. Prepares students for lunch or snack periods by performing duties such as washing, setting up, cleaning up and assist in feeding students with eating problems; instruct students in appropriate table manners. 10. Assists students with various perceptual, motor-sensory and body awareness skills training. 11. Provides support to the teacher by setting up work areas; preparing instructional, motivational and decorative materials; operate audio-visual equipment; participate in special programs and activities. 12. Assists in administering tests and grading as directed. 13. Assists the teacher in maintaining the health and safety of special education students by being aware of environment and potential hazards of student actions; assist the teacher according to established guidelines and procedures. 14. Provides individualized attention and assistance to students to include times of stress, frustration or emotional upsets. 15. Provide necessary support for students in a school setting. 16. May translate written material from English to a designated second language and from that language to English; may translate conversations or provide interpretive services for non-English speaking individuals and others. 17. Administers routine minor first aid as necessary. 18. Performs related duties as directed.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
Knowledge Of:
1. Learning and development problems of special education children. 2. Child guidance principles and practices. 3.
Correct English language usage including:
vocabulary, spelling, grammar and punctuation. 4. Effective reading, oral and writing communication skills. 5. General needs and behavior of children. 6. Classroom procedures and equipment. 7. Record keeping techniques. 8. Instructional methods and techniques. 9. First aid techniques and practices. 10. Translation of written material from English into a designated second language and from that language into English is desirable. 11. Translation of conversations or provide interpretive services for non-English speaking individuals and others is desirable.
Ability To:
1. Accept, understand and appropriately respond to the needs of special education students. 2. Effectively assist the teacher in responding to students' emergencies. 3. Maintain confidentiality of school and student information. 4. Prepare instructional materials as directed by the teacher. 5. Learn to interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures. 6. React calmly under stressful situations and emergencies. 7. Meet schedules and timelines. 8. Effectively speak, read and write English. 9. Perform general clerical work and maintain records in support of a teacher. 10. Understand and follow oral and written directions. 11. Work cooperatively with others and independently as needed. 12. Understand normal conversations and oral instructions. 13. Write and print legibly.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
1. Pass an examination demonstrating high school proficiency in reading, writing and mathematics as administered by the Rio School District. 2. CPR and Red Cross First Aid Certificates are desirable. 3. Valid State of California Drivers' License is desirable.
WORKING CONDITIONS
1. Special Education classroom student environment. 2. Subject to sitting, bending or stooping, lifting and walking. 3. Subject to working in a school environment and exposure to sunlight and other outside conditions. 4. Subject to working at computer video work station(s), operating computer keyboards, looking at computer video screens.
PHYSICAL ABILITIES
Seeing to inspect documents and to read fine print; depth perception to file; hearing and speaking to communicate with others in a normal voice in person and on telephone; speak clearly to communicate with parents, staff and others; sitting or standing alternately for extended periods of time; climbing stairs; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate office equipment; write legibly; bending and stooping; reaching overhead and above shoulders; lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling objects weighing up to twenty-five (25) pounds; pushing student in a wheelchair.
