Job Description

The City of Pleasanton is excited to announce an opportunity for dedicated individuals to join our team as Program Assistant - Traffic Engineering Interns in the Community and Economic Development Department, Traffic Engineering Division . In this part-time, temporary role, you will support the City's traffic engineering and transportation operations through a combination of field and office assignments. Typical assignments include collecting traffic data using specialized equipment, documenting field conditions on roadways, traffic signals, sidewalks, and bikeways, maintaining computerized collision records, updating traffic-related maps using GIS, and assisting with traffic control and signage-related project support. This position offers a dynamic opportunity to gain practical, hands-on experience while helping improve transportation safety and mobility throughout the Pleasanton community. We're Looking for Someone Who Is Customer service-oriented and able to communicate effectively with the public and staff, both orally and in writing. Detail-oriented, with a strong focus on collecting, organizing, and presenting accurate information. Well-organized, self-motivated, and proactive in completing assignments in both field and office settings. Dependable and able to organize work, set priorities, multitask, and follow through with minimal direction. Interested in gaining practical experience in traffic engineering, transportation operations, and municipal government work. In This Role, You Will Collect traffic data throughout the City using specialized equipment. Drive City vehicles, including a mid-size van, to support field assignments. Take field measurements and photographs and document observations related to roadways, traffic signals, sidewalks, and bikeways. Organize traffic data into spreadsheets, charts, and graphics using Microsoft Excel and related software. Perform routine maintenance of the computerized collision records program. Update traffic-related maps using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Assist staff with project plans, estimates, work requests, and installation support for signs and other traffic control devices. A Few Challenges You Might Face Balancing a variety of technical and administrative assignments, sometimes shifting between fieldwork and office-based analysis. Working outdoors in varying conditions while maintaining safety, accuracy, and attention to detail. Learning specialized equipment and software used for traffic data collection, mapping, and records management. Managing assignments responsibly during the school year while adapting to the pace and expectations of a public agency environment. The Ideal Candidate Will Be Enrolled in an undergraduate program in civil engineering, transportation engineering, or a related field, or otherwise pursuing a college degree in a technical field. Expected to graduate in May 2027 or later and able to work during the school year. In possession of a valid California Class C driver's license. Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel. Familiar with, or currently taking coursework in, the principles and practices of traffic engineering. Professional and effective when interacting with customers and coworkers. Able to work independently and as part of a team while staying organized and meeting deadlines. Traffic Intern Education and Experience:
Be pursuing a college degree in a technical field.
License:
Possess a valid California Class C driver's license.
Ability to:
Be proficient in Microsoft Office computer applications. Possess the ability to multitask and prioritize assignments. Possess strong oral and written communication skills.
Age Requirement:
Be at least 18 years of age
