PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Help meet physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities in a self-contained classroom. Assist in implementation of classroom programs, including self-help, behavior management, and instruction programs. Work under general supervisor of principal and immediate direction of certified teacher.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Certification:
High school diploma or GED certificate Meet state certification requirements Minimum 48 college hours
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Demonstrated interest in and aptitude for the work to be performed. Work well with students with disabilities Ability to communicate effectively Follow written and verbal directives
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
Assists under the supervision of the Special Education teacher with the arrival and departure of students. Prepares for classroom activities under the direction of the Special Education teacher. Keep classroom displays acceptable, keep classroom clean, have instructional materials ready to use as needed by teacher. Works with individual or small groups of handicapped students to reinforce lessons/activities initially introduced by the teacher and to assist with classroom experiments, demonstrations, etc. Assists with any remedial drills, reading or storytelling keeping accurate records of student progress and performance. Helps students take care of physical needs and personal care including feeding, bathroom needs and personal hygiene. Helps manage behavior of students. This includes intervening in crisis situations and restraining a student who becomes a danger to himself/herself and others. Assist and intervene in situations such as prevention of self-abusive and aggressive behaviors through use of District Crisis Management training. Helps students follow teachers' instructions through physical management such as prevention of self abusive and/or aggressive behaviors in which students may engage. Assumes responsibility for learning and adapting to each student's special medical, physical, communicative and emotional needs. Works with assigned student or small group of students to develop Fine/Gross and social motor skills, and conduct exercise activities assigned by the teacher. Assists assigned students throughout school day, inside and outside classroom including lunchroom, bus, and playground duty. Assists students during transition from class to class. Keeps teacher informed of special needs or problems of assigned students. Keeps documentation of students' medical procedures, behavior patterns, etc. Participates in staff development programs, faculty meetings, and special events as needed. Maintains confidentiality. Performs other work-related duties as assigned by Special Education teacher. Upholds and enforces school rules, administrative regulations, and state and local board policy.

Maintain emotional control under stress; work prolonged or irregular hours In Pre-K classrooms as well as special needs of students, staff aides will address personal/hygiene needs of students such as assistance in toileting, washing of hands, changing of clothing when soiled, etc.
FOR INSTRUCTION OUTSIDE A TYPICAL CLASSROOM SETTING
(e.g. P.E. Teachers, Fine Arts Instructors, Shop Instructors, etc.) the following physical requirements must be addressed: Constant walking, standing, and movement to ensure safety and well-being of students in large open areas such as playgrounds, gyms, football fields, shop areas, etc. Physical activity, modeling, and directing instruction in front of large group setting of students in order to define/model expected and appropriate behaviors Lifting, carrying, or pulling of instructional equipment such as balls, instruments, cases, tools, etc. which are necessary to the instructional delivery of the lesson Exposure to various climate settings and temperatures relative to classroom instruction within/outside school building/facility The foregoing statements describe the general purpose and responsibilities assigned to this job and are not an exhaustive list of all responsibilities and duties that may be assigned or skills that may be required.
