Aurora Public Schools Compensation and Benefits Summary:
Under the supervision and direction of a Registered Nurse, this position is responsible for providing medical assistance including scheduled and emergency medication administration, technical medical procedures and first aid care to chronically or acutely ill and injured students. This position will also maintain and compile student health records, files and database and health-related reports. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Daily 40% Provide health and first aid care to sick and injured students. Duties include determining the severity of the illness/injury, providing appropriate interventions for chronic and acute conditions, consulting with the school registered nurse, and communicating with parents, as needed. Practice Standard Precautions and appropriate disposal methods to prevent the exposure of self and others to blood and bodily fluids that can cause diseases. Perform technical procedures as necessary and delegated by the school Registered Nurse. (e.g., diabetes management skills, g-tube feedings, urinary catheterization, etc.). Practice proper body mechanics while assisting students in and out of wheelchairs for positioning, diaper changing and toileting. Other duties include completing Student Accident Reports, reporting Child Abuse concerns, calling 911 if necessary, and monitoring chronically ill students. Daily 10% Prepare and maintain student health files, documents, and reports. Includes documents to inform school staff of children with special health needs, and district/states health reports. Maintain all student immunization files and ensure all students have an age or grade appropriate Certificate of Immunization. Track students who are non- compliant with immunizations and prepare student letters to be approved by a supervising Registered Nurse. Daily 15% Document care, communications, and treatments related to each student in the student's electronic health file as directed by Health Services documentation guidelines. Daily 15% Administer medications and perform medical procedures, as delegated. Document per Health Services guidelines, consult supervising Registered Nurse, notify parents/caregivers when medications are running low and ensure paperwork is properly maintained for each student. Daily 2% Responsible for mandatory reporting of child abuse and works with other school staff for follow up communications with local/state agencies as needed. Daily 2% Maintain a clean, hygienic, orderly, and appropriately stocked health office, including inventorying and ordering supplies. Daily 10% Communicate with the School Nurse regarding all student health-related issues in an appropriate and timely fashion. Daily 2% Participate in the coordination and execution of vision and hearing screenings for students according to state law/guidelines. Track students who require vision and hearing referrals, prepare student letters to be approved by supervising Registered Nurse, and track student follow up. Daily 4% Perform other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING
High school diploma or equivalent required, Associate's degree preferred. Must complete training for medication administration, CPR, and First Aid within 1 month of hire. Complete health paraeducator training series within 2 months of hire.
EXPERIENCE
No experience required. Preferred experience with K-12 aged students and/or pediatric populations, work experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Medical Assistant (MA), previous use of student information systems and/or electronic medical records.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, EQUIPMENT & OTHER
Oral and written communication, interpersonal, organizational, decision making, problem solving, public relations, and basic math skills. Ability to make sound decisions in crisis situations. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions. Willingness to ask questions when needed. Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the job. Ability to work with ill and injured students and students with special needs. Basic health care knowledge. Operating knowledge of and experience with personal computers required. Operating knowledge of general office equipment required within 2 weeks after hire. Operating knowledge of the student information system required within 2 months after hire.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS
CPR and First Aid certifications required within 1 month after hire and renewed every 2 years. Medication Administration Training required every 3 years. Child Care Immunization class required annually. Annual Standard Precautions training. Other training as required by Health Services or
APS. SUPERVISION/TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITY
This job is responsible for supervising the behavior and safety of students while in the health office and in the school office. Acts as a resource for individuals throughout the school by providing care to sick and injured students. Provides data and reports regarding student health, immunizations, and vision and hearing screening compliance as directed by Health Services.
SAFETY TO SELF AND OTHERS
Individual is required to follow strict health and safety guidelines provided by Health Services due to; high risk of exposure to illness due to caring for sick children and risk of injury due to caring for injured or disabled students. May also expose others to disease or further injury if a person in this position fails to properly handle or dispose of body fluids or administer proper and timely care to sick or injured students.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The employee is occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
MENTAL FUNCTIONS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to analyze, communicate, instruct, evaluate and use interpersonal skills. The employee is frequently required to copy, coordinate, compute and compile. The employee is occasionally required to compare and negotiate.
