Full Job Description Duration:

6 Months (August 25 - February25)

Work Hours:

8am - 3pm (1/2hr lunch) (Hours may vary up to 28hrs per week)

Schedule:

Tuesday through Friday (with the potential for occasional weekend work)

Salary:

$15-18 per hour (depending on experience)

MAJOR FUNCTION

Prepares, organizes, and implements environmental education programs to a variety of groups including but not limited to school groups, after school programs, families, community groups, and the general public. Ability to manage and supervise large groups of children. Provides instructional leadership and learning activities on topics related to environmental education and natural resources. While representing the County and District by providing sound science information on water resource and natural resources of Polk County. Training and general instructions from supervisor regarding the program to be administered. Will work seasonally.

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

Prepare for educational programs, which may include but not limited to making copies of materials, setting up rooms, setting up stations, cleaning and disinfecting supplies, assisting with the creation of educational content, and anything else needed to prepare for groups. Maintain organization of materials and supplies Assist with communication with the teachers, parents, and other adults leading the childrens groups. Assist with staff and/or teacher training workshops as needed during this time frame. Provides support for nature-based recreation activities and assists the visiting public on the environmental lands. Supports the environmental education program at Polks Nature Discovery Center. Provides a positive experience for the visitors at the Discovery Center. Assists with the staffing and operating of the Discovery Center. Performs environmental education programs including guided hikes, ranger stations, tram tours, and group activities. Provides programs on natural resources for all ages. Outreach program; coordinate and staff booth exhibit at special events to promote importance of natural resources. Assists in the management of environmental lands with special emphasis on Circle B Bar Reserve. Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Knowledge of natural community habitats. Knowledge of local flora. Knowledge of and ability to operate a personal computer using software utilized by the work unit such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and ArcView GIS. Ability to supervise and manage large groups of children. Ability to work independently in the field in all types of conditions. Ability to become knowledgeable of County goals, procedures, practices, regulations, policies and ordinances. Ability to communicate effectively in written and oral formats and with public speaking. Ability to use good judgment and make independent decisions. Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with employees, officials, and the public. Ability to see, differentiate colors, talk, ambulate independently, walk, bend, stoop, sit, stand, drive, and operate motorized vehicles including all- terrain vehicles. Ability to lift 25 pounds regularly and up to 45 pounds occasionally, and hike over 3 miles while providing an interpretation presentation. The ability to conduct Pre and Post Test evaluations of groups when needed. Ability to work a flexible schedule. Ability to work a minimum of 3 days per week.

SPECIAL PREFERENCES

Preference will be given to individuals with the following: Experience with knowledge of Central Florida flora and fauna. Experience with and knowledge of environmental lands management methods. Experience in public speaking and environmental education. Experience with Microsoft Office Suite applications, Illustrator, and PageMaker. People with teaching, camp counselor, recreational program, or related work experience.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

for I Graduate of an accredited high school or possess an acceptance equivalency diploma. Must possess a valid drivers license to operate company vehicle and be able to secure a valid drivers license at the time of employment (to operate company vehicle). Must pass background level 1check and background level 2 check. Must pass the countys defensive driving course A comparable amount of related training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

for II Graduate of an accredited high school or possess an acceptance equivalency diploma. Must possess a valid drivers license to operate company vehicle and be able to secure a valid drivers license at the time of employment-to operate company vehicle Must pass background level 1check and background level 2 check. Must pass the countys defensive driving course Must have a minimum of one (1) year of experience in natural areas management or education related fields. A comparable amount of related training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

for III Graduate of an accredited high school or possess an acceptance equivalency diploma. Must be 18 years of age by hire date. Must possess a valid drivers license to operate company vehicle and be able to secure a valid drivers license at the time of employment-to operate company vehicle. Must pass background level 1check and background level 2 check. Must pass the countys defensive driving course Must have a minimum of two (2) years of experience in natural areas management or education related field. A bachelors degree in natural areas management or education-related field may be substituted for the minimum years of field experience required. A comparable amount of related training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

for IV Graduate of an accredited high school or possess an acceptance equivalency diploma. Must be 18 years of age by hire date. Must possess a valid drivers license to operate company vehicle and be able to secure a valid drivers license at the time of employment-to operate company vehicle. Must pass background level 1check and background level 2 check. Must pass the countys defensive driving course Must have a minimum of three (3) years of experience in natural areas management or education related field. A bachelors degree in natural areas management or education-related field with at least one (1) year of experience in a related field may be substituted for the minimum years of field experience required.
