The Paraprofessional, as a member of the instructional team, works under the supervision of the classroom teacher and the Principal. This person primarily works in classroom, assisting the teacher in implementing instruction and related services.
Such assistance may include:
providing instructional assistance, guiding additional practice opportunities, re-teaching, and monitoring behavior. Certification Requirements All Georgia Paraprofessionals must hold a valid state license issued by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC). Georgia educators who hold a valid professional certificate may serve as Paraprofessionals without holding a specific Paraprofessional license. An individual must be employed as a Paraprofessional in a Georgia local unit of administration (LUA) in order to qualify for a Paraprofessional license, which is valid for five years. In addition to employment, the applicant must meet one of the following qualifications: Hold an associate's degree or higher in any subject from a GaPSC-accepted accredited institution; Have completed 2 years (60 semester hours) of college coursework above the remedial level at a GaPSC-accepted accredited institution Hold a minimum of a high school diploma or GED equivalent and have passed the GACE Paraprofessional Assessment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Meet Paraprofessional requirements as established by state and local mandates; Implement school and district policies and procedures; Establish and maintain solid working relations with colleagues; Participate in planning sessions with the learning team; Provide support and assistance to students; Demonstrate creativity, flexibility, and perseverance in dealing with challenging learning, behavioral, family, and classroom situations; Provide strategic instruction within the classroom for students who are in need of support learning core curriculum; Provide support and supervision of students as assigned (during transitions, in special classes, during lunch, etc.); Assist in the administration and scoring of assessments used to monitor individual progress; Assist with paperwork and clerical duties as needed.
