Summer Meal Program Assistant Status:
Temporary, Part-time, 20-25 hours per week, May-August Reports to:
Children's Programs Manager Qualifications:
The ideal Summer Meal Program Assistant for the Northeast Iowa Food Bank understands and is passionate about the organization's mission to provide nutritious meals to youth and community partners in our 16 county service areas. This individual will be a vital component of the Food Bank in the fight against hunger. This team member must demonstrate outstanding ability to work with the Children's Programs staff to prepare, cook, lead group projects, and take on other duties as necessary. A passion for social justice and compassion for others are keys to being a staff member at the Northeast Iowa Food Bank. The Northeast Iowa Food Bank strives to work as a unified team to close the meal gap in northeast Iowa, to this end the Summer Meal Program Assistant will need to be capable of working as a team, as well as being a self-starter. In addition, maintaining a positive outlook will play a large role in being a motivator and encourager for the community, clients, and volunteers alike. About the
Job:
The responsibilities of the Summer Meal Program Assistant include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Assist with general operations of the NEIFB Kids Café Program and Summer Feeding Program. Duties include but are not limited to cooking and preparing meals according to daily menus, organizing product for group projects, leading volunteer groups and helping maintain a clean and food safe environment.
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures set forth by the Northeast Iowa Food Bank (NEIFB) in accordance with CACFP and SFSP programs, including guidelines for administration of the program, meal components, nutrition content and portions sizes, and Feeding America standards, in addition to, local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Ensure a clean, safe, and organized work environment in accordance with Northeast Iowa Food Bank and the Black Hawk County Health Department standards and regulations.
  • Greet, train, and supervise volunteers as well as share the mission of the NEIFB; provide general guidance of projects; assure proper training of volunteers to include specific jobs and safety concerns. Communicate frequently with volunteers to ensure they are satisfied and appropriately placed.
  • Assist in loading meals and helping deliver meals to Summer Feeding partner sites.
  • Assist in monitoring meal sites, which will require travel to and from sites.
  • Provide occasional coverage in other areas of the Programs Department, as necessary, in times of high need.
  • In instances of a federal, state, or locally declared emergency, NEIFB is considered an essential service and emergency responder; all its employees may be called in to perform regular or emergent duties.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the mission of the Northeast Iowa Food Bank.

Required:
  • Experience with in a commercial kitchen, preferably large-batch cooking
  • Knowledge of basic healthy nutrition and general dietary guidelines
  • Ability to become ServSafe Manager certified
  • Ability to become certified in CACFP Steps to Success
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to safely work in a kitchen using knives, stoves, ovens, etc.
  • Ability to work in extreme temperatures
  • Must pass a criminal background check
  • Valid driver's license and safe driving record
  • Ability to perform physical labor as necessary (stand/walk/move for long periods of time, lift up to 50 pounds, work with warehouse equipment)
  • Ability to work, learn and adapt in a fast-paced environment Preferred
  • Professional training or associate degree
  • Experience with non-profit organizations Desired
