Job Description

Job Overview We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Special Education Paraprofessional to support students with disabilities in an inclusive and/or special education slassroom setting. The paraprofessional will work under the supervision of one or more certified special education teachers to assist in delivering instructional and behavioral support to students with diverse learning, emotional, behavioral, or physical needs.
Key Responsibilities Student Support:
Provide one-on-one or small-group support to students with disabilities, as outlined in Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). Assist students in accessing the general education curriculum by modifying or adapting assignments and materials as needed. Support students with mobility, communication, self-care, and social skills as required by their specific needs. Monitor student behavior and implement behavioral interventions under the guidance of the teacher and/or behavior specialist. Encourage student independence while providing appropriate scaffolding and prompts.
Instructional Supports:
Assist the teacher in delivering lessons by preparing materials, helping with instruction, and reinforcing concepts taught in class. Participate in classroom activities, helping to maintain a structured and inclusive learning environment. Provide feedback and observations to the teacher regarding student performance, behavior, and progress. Support the implementation of accommodations and modifications outlined in students' IEPs and 504 Plans.
Classroom and Administrative Support:
Help maintain a safe, clean, and organized classroom environment. Supervise students during transitions, recess, lunch, field trips, and other non-classroom settings. Perform clerical tasks such as copying, filing, and preparing instructional materials. Assist with progress monitoring, data collection, and documentation required for IEP meetings and reporting.
Collaboration and Professionalism:
Collaborate effectively with special education teachers, general education staff, therapists, counselors, and other team members. Maintain confidentiality and respect the privacy of students and families. Participate in professional development, training sessions, and staff meetings as required. Demonstrate empathy, flexibility, and a positive attitude when supporting students and working with staff.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent (required); Associate's degree, or two years college, or a passing score on the Praxis test for Paraprofessionals (required). Experience working with children, especially those with disabilities (preferred). Paraprofessional certification or ability to meet state/local paraprofessional requirements (if applicable). Basic knowledge of child development, special education practices, and behavior management strategies. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to remain calm, patient, and supportive in high-stress or challenging situations. Physical ability to assist with lifting, toileting, or mobility support if needed.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed in a classroom setting with some activities outdoors or in other school environments. May involve physical activity such as lifting, bending, standing for extended periods, and assisting students with physical needs. Regular interaction with students who may exhibit a wide range of behaviors and communication styles.
