Teaching Assistant- Montessori Toddler Community

Montessori Toddler Classroom Assistant Teacher Roles and Responsibilities The primary role of the classroom assistant is to effectively manage the classroom to ensure that the Directress is free to present lessons one-on-one to children without interruption or distraction. The Assistant's role is vital to the success of the Montessori classroom. She is responsible for the entire classroom especially when the Directress is presenting a Montessori material to a child or several children. The Assistant is one who helps maintain and restores order to the environment by the cleanliness of the materials, the shelves and the order restored once materials have been worked with and returned to the shelves. In addition, the Classroom Assistant is responsible for preparing and serving an afternoon snack, spending time on gross motor development for outdoor recess and working with the children until their dismissal time. In the Toddler Community, the Assistant also assists the children with the toileting routine and mastering toileting independence.

Other Classroom Expectations Include:

− Complete daily, weekly and monthly cleaning checklists to maintain classroom cleanliness and order for the environment. − Help Directress prepare for lessons by getting materials ready, setting up work and cleaning materials. − Supervise students in classroom between classes, during lunch, at recess, during aftercare and on field trips. − Reinforce lessons presented by the Directress by reviewing material with students one-on-one or in small groups. − Enforce school and class rules to help teach students proper behavior. − Role model own behavior so children learn the grace and courtesy of the environment as well as socially acceptable behavior. − Aide Directress with recordkeeping, such as tracking attendance and tracking lessons given. − Discuss assigned duties with Directress in order to coordinate instructional efforts. − Observe students' performance and work and record relevant data and observations to assess progress. − Maintain classroom standards as required by AMI standards. − Participate in problem solving sessions in order to resolve bottleneck or operational issues. − Support the team by filling in during the aftercare work cycles when team members are absent and/or needed elsewhere. − Support the Montessori classroom by being available for supervision of the outdoor learning environments during the afternoon work cycle. − Laminate, copy and reproduce Montessori materials as needed for classroom use. − Additional responsibilities as assigned to support the goals of IMA and its team.
