Hillel Sims Position Summary The Maker Space Program Assistant supports the daily operation of the RCC Maker Space, a hands-on creative and technical environment that provides students, faculty, and staff with opportunities to explore 3D printing, prototyping, design, virtual reality, and STEM applications. The Assistant helps users access Maker Space equipment and resources, supports workshops and demonstrations, assists with basic equipment maintenance and troubleshooting, and contributes to outreach and special projects. This Level II position is designed for students who are ready to apply developing technical, communication, customer-service, and problem-solving skills while receiving continued training and supervision. Federal Work-Study Responsibilities Greet users and assist with routine Maker Space check-in and sign-out procedures. Organize tools, supplies, instructional materials, and work areas according to staff directions. Assist with basic setup and breakdown for demonstrations, workshops, and scheduled activities. Maintain routine inventory, usage, and supply records using approved forms or spreadsheets. Provide basic orientation to posted room procedures and refer technical, safety, or equipment-operation questions to authorized staff. Support cleaning and orderly storage of materials; do not independently authorize equipment use or provide unsupervised technical instruction. Federal Work-Study Eligibility Currently enrolled at Roxbury Community College for the 2026-2027 academic year. Have an active Federal Work-Study award and sufficient remaining FWS eligibility before beginning work. Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) in accordance with institutional and financial-aid requirements. Complete all required student-employment and payroll documentation before beginning work. Work only the approved FWS schedule and duties assigned by the designated RCC supervisor.
Job Requirements:
Federal Work-Study Compliance Notes This FWS assignment is part-time, on-campus student employment and is contingent upon continued Federal Work-Study eligibility and available award funding. FWS students may perform only the duties identified for the FWS assignment and approved by the supervisor; Learn & Earn responsibilities are not interchangeable with FWS duties. Students and supervisors are responsible for monitoring scheduled hours, so the student does not exceed the approved FWS award or institutional work-hour limits. Timesheets must accurately reflect hours actually worked and be approved by the designated supervisor through the College's approved timekeeping process. By successfully completing this position, the student should strengthen their ability to: Operate and support selected Maker Space tools and technologies within the scope of their training. Apply basic 3D printing, prototyping, design, and fabrication concepts. Use technical and design software to support assigned projects. Apply basic troubleshooting and problem-solving strategies. Communicate technical information clearly to users with different levels of experience. Provide professional customer and peer support. Follow workplace safety, equipment-care, and operating procedures. Track supplies, usage, and routine operational information. Support workshops, demonstrations, events, and outreach activities. Demonstrate teamwork, reliability, initiative, organization, and workplace professionalism. Supervision & Performance The Maker Space Program Assistant reports to Hillel Sims or another designated department supervisor. Students receive equipment-specific training before independently assisting users with tools or processes. Student employees are expected to follow all Maker Space safety procedures, RCC Student Employment policies, and department expectations. Students will receive regular supervision, feedback, and professional-development opportunities. Performance concerns will be addressed through RCC's progressive intervention process. Advancement Students who demonstrate strong technical proficiency, reliability, independent problem-solving, project ownership, workshop support, and peer leadership may become candidates for the Level III Maker Space Program Lead or other advanced STEM and technical positions when opportunities are available.
