Position Title:
Elementary Library Instructional Assistant Long-term Substitute Reports To:
GMRSD Elementary Building PrincipalsPosition SummaryThe Elementary Library Instructional Assistant supports the operation of the district's three elementary school libraries and assists students and staff in accessing library resources. The position promotes literacy, fosters a love of reading, supports information literacy skills, and assists with library programming and daily library functions. The Library Instructional Assistant works collaboratively with classroom teachers, students, and administrators to create welcoming and engaging learning environments across all three elementary schools.

Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesLibrary OperationsSupport the daily operation of the district's three elementary school libraries.

Travel between elementary schools according to an established schedule and district needs.

Check materials in and out.

Shelve, organize, inventory, and maintain library materials and equipment.

Process new books and materials, including labeling, covering, and catalog preparation.

Assist students and staff in locating books, resources, and materials.

Maintain attractive and organized library displays and bulletin boards.

Support the circulation of books and other instructional materials.

Assist in maintaining library spaces that are safe, organized, and conducive to learning.

Student SupportAssist students in selecting age-appropriate books and resources.

Promote reading engagement and independent reading habits.

Support individual students, small groups, and classes during library activities.

Reinforce library procedures, expectations, and responsible use of materials.

Assist students in developing basic research and information literacy skills.

Instructional SupportCollaborate with classroom teachers and library staff to support instructional activities.

Assist with library lessons, literacy initiatives, and special projects.

Prepare materials and resources for library instruction and student activities.

Help facilitate book fairs, reading challenges, author visits, family literacy events, and other literacy-focused programs.

Support district and school literacy goals through active engagement with students and staff.

Administrative ResponsibilitiesMaintain accurate circulation and inventory records.

Prepare reports and correspondence as assigned.

Assist with collection maintenance, weeding, and inventory processes.

Perform clerical duties related to library operations.

Maintain confidentiality of student and staff information.

QualificationsRequiredHigh school diploma or equivalent.

Experience working with elementary-aged children.

Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students, staff, and families.

Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Basic computer proficiency and the ability to learn library management systems.

Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.

Ability to travel between district elementary schools.

PreferredAssociate degree or coursework in education, library science, child development, or a related field.

Experience in a school library, public library, or educational setting.

Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesKnowledge of children's literature and literacy development.

Ability to foster positive relationships with students and staff.

Ability to organize materials and manage multiple tasks efficiently across multiple school locations.

Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.

Ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences.

Sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, and move throughout school buildings and grounds for extended periods of time.

Maintain regular and reliable attendance.

Supervise students in classrooms, hallways, cafeterias, playgrounds, athletic fields, buses, and other school settings.

Respond quickly and appropriately to student needs, emergencies, behavioral incidents, and safety concerns.

Lift, carry, push, or pull materials, equipment, and supplies weighing up to 25 pounds on a regular basis and up to 50 pounds occasionally with assistance when necessary.

Operate standard office and instructional equipment, including computers, tablets, printers, telephones, and audiovisual equipment.

Reach, grasp, handle, and manipulate instructional materials and equipment.

Work in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments and tolerate exposure to varying temperatures, noise levels, and weather conditions.

Maintain emotional control and exercise sound judgment in a fast-paced educational environment involving frequent interruptions and changing priorities.
