Job Description

Position Summary The Assistant Teacher / Enrichment Instructor supports the Lead Teacher in creating a peaceful, engaging, and developmentally appropriate learning environment for elementary-aged students. Guided by Montessori and experiential learning philosophies, this role helps students grow academically, socially, emotionally, and creatively. In addition to classroom support responsibilities, this position includes enrichment programming with opportunities to integrate: Art and creative expression Cooking and culinary experiences Outdoor education and adventure-based learning Hiking and educational field trips The ideal candidate is nurturing, energetic, organized, and passionate about hands-on learning experiences both inside and outside the classroom. Core Responsibilities Classroom Support Assist the Lead Teacher in implementing daily classroom activities and lessons Support individualized learning and small-group instruction Maintain a calm, respectful, and positive classroom environment Supervise students throughout the school day including classroom transitions, playground, lunch, bathroom breaks, car line, and field trips Help ensure all students are progressing developmentally and academically Assume teaching responsibilities in the absence of the Lead Teacher Maintain awareness of classroom dynamics and student safety at all times Collaborate closely with teachers, administration, and support staff Student Development & Communication Observe and support each child's developmental strengths and challenges Foster independence, confidence, creativity, and social-emotional growth Assist with classroom documentation and communication systems Maintain professional and respectful communication with families and colleagues Support a peaceful and inclusive learning atmosphere Enrichment & Specialty Programming Art Integration Incorporate visual arts, crafts, and creative projects into classroom experiences Lead or assist with art instruction and hands-on creative activities Encourage artistic exploration and self-expression Cooking & Culinary Instruction Assist students in preparing snacks and simple meals Lead age-appropriate cooking and baking activities Teach kitchen safety, nutrition awareness, and food preparation skills Outdoor Education & Adventure Leadership Support outdoor learning experiences and nature-based education Help organize and supervise hiking trips, outdoor excursions, and adventure field trips Teach outdoor responsibility, environmental stewardship, and teamwork Assist with outdoor recreation activities and experiential learning opportunities Classroom Environment & Operations Maintain a clean, safe, organized, and prepared classroom environment Assist with cleaning and care of classroom materials and shared spaces Support responsible use of classroom supplies and budgeted materials Follow all school policies, safety procedures, and licensing requirements Attend staff meetings, trainings, and professional development opportunities Qualifications Required Minimum 2 years of experience working with children in a school, camp, enrichment, or childcare setting High school diploma or equivalent Strong communication and classroom management skills CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain) Ability to work collaboratively and professionally with staff and families Preferred Bachelor's Degree in Education, Early Childhood Education, Outdoor Education, Fine Arts, Recreation, or related field Montessori experience or interest in Montessori philosophy Experience with: Art instruction Cooking instruction Outdoor education Hiking leadership Nature-based learning Experiential education Physical Requirements Ability to lift and carry approximately 15-30 pounds Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, walk, and participate in active outdoor programming Ability to supervise children in both classroom and outdoor environments Ability to maintain professionalism and positive performance in a fast-paced educational setting Ideal Candidate Traits We are looking for someone who is: Calm, patient, and nurturing Creative and hands-on Adventurous and comfortable outdoors Organized and proactive Passionate about experiential learning and child development Excited to contribute to a collaborative school community How to Apply Please submit to erin@bmtmont.
