Elementary School Exceptional Children Instructional Assistant Status:
Full Time Reports to: Elementary School Principal Voyager Academy is a fully accredited K-12 charter school located in Durham, NC where students participate in deep learning through authentic project-based learning experiences. Our faculty and staff collaboratively strive to inspire life-long learning and lead by modeling our core values of confidence, empathy, curiosity, reflection, and integrity. We are currently seeking an EC Instructional Assistant to join our Elementary School Team. The Elementary School EC Instructional Assistant will perform a variety of technical and clerical tasks in assisting a teacher of students with disabilities. The EC Instructional Assistant will support the efforts of the teacher, meet the needs of all students, and ensure the provision of quality instruction for all students. The teacher is under the supervision of the building principal and assistant principal.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Provides one-on-one assistance with academics and behavioral supports needed and may lead small group activities. Assists teacher with general housekeeping, clerical duties and repair/maintenance of school equipment. Assists the teacher with executing instruction and evaluating its effectiveness, participates in planning. Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior. Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities. Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct, and for the classroom develop reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedures and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner. Adheres to all school policies Adapts classroom materials and lessons at the direction of the teacher. Strives to maintain and improve professional competence Obtains and maintains training necessary to perform this job as directed by the principal or EC Director. Leads a variety of classroom activities aimed at building students' social, behavioral, and mental health. The special education teacher assistant may also teach lessons with the teacher's supervision. Guides students in working and playing harmoniously with other students utilizing social skills objectives and Voyager Academy Character Education Traits. Contributes to making or copying materials needed for lessons Observes students and keeps data on student's successes and challenges within the classroom. Assists teacher in maintaining neat work and study areas. Assists with the safe supervision of students. Follows supervising teacher's directions Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as the Teacher/Principal may assign.
