We are committed to fostering independence, curiosity, respect, and a lifelong love of learning through authentic Montessori education. Position Summary The Teacher Assistant works alongside and supports the Lead Montessori Teacher in a mixed-age classroom where the Montessori approach to education is implemented. The Assistant helps maintain a prepared environment, supports the developmental needs of children, and contributes to the smooth operation of the classroom and school community.
Schedule Lower Elementary Assistant:
Regular working hours are 7:45 am-3 pm, as listed on the Greenville Montessori School calendar. Flexibility may occasionally be required to support school events, meetings, and special activities. General Duties and Responsibilities Support Children's Development and Learning Support children's independence, concentration, and engagement in classroom activities in accordance with Montessori principles. Work individually or with small groups of children as directed by the Lead Montessori Teacher. Observe children and support classroom routines, lessons, and activities under the guidance of the Lead Montessori Teacher. Share questions, observations, and concerns regarding students with the Lead Montessori Teacher. Demonstrate positive, respectful communication with children and phrase directives in a constructive manner. Protect the peace, dignity, and privacy of each child while at school. Support the Montessori Environment Assist in maintaining the prepared Montessori environment by: o Caring for and maintaining classroom materials o Maintaining an orderly classroom o Dusting and cleaning classroom and shared spaces o Refilling and organizing supplies o Preparing and repairing materials as needed Assist in maintaining an environment that meets all North Carolina fire, health, safety, childcare, and non-public school requirements. Support students with reading practice, classroom organization, work completion, and small-group activities under the direction of the Lead Montessori Teacher. Safety and Supervision Share responsibility for the safety and well-being of all Greenville Montessori School children, not only those assigned to a particular classroom. Provide active supervision indoors and outdoors at all times. Ensure children are never left unattended in the classroom, on the playground, or elsewhere on campus. Report all accidents, injuries, incidents, or concerns to the Lead Montessori Teacher immediately and assist with documentation as required. Assist with fire drills, safety drills, emergency procedures, and other school safety initiatives. Record Keeping and Organization Assist with classroom record keeping, observations, inventory management, and documentation as directed by the Lead Montessori Teacher. Help maintain classroom organization and support the efficient operation of the learning environment. Professional Responsibilities Establish positive relationships with students characterized by mutual respect, warmth, and goodwill. Maintain professional relationships with parents, referring classroom concerns and questions to the Lead Montessori Teacher. Demonstrate empathy and respect toward children, families, and colleagues. Show an interest in child development and Montessori education, particularly in fostering independence and maintaining developmentally appropriate expectations. Notify the Head of School promptly regarding any significant concerns involving a child, parent, or staff member. Maintain an atmosphere of cooperation, professionalism, and mutual support among staff members. Demonstrate respect for all individuals and contribute to a welcoming and inclusive school community that values diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. Give full attention to job responsibilities and refrain from personal cell phone use, texting, or other distractions during work hours except in emergencies or as authorized. Maintain the privacy and confidentiality of students, families, staff members, and school information. Physical Requirements Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds. Ability to bend, kneel, squat, sit on the floor, and move comfortably throughout the classroom and playground environments. Ability to actively supervise children indoors and outdoors. Other Duties Assist with special projects, programs, events, field trips, and planning activities as requested. Perform other duties as assigned by the Lead Montessori Teacher or Head of School.
