Education Program Assistant Organizational Background:

UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) is a global leader in research, education, and public outreach on lakes. TERC provides critical scientific information to help understand, restore, and sustain the Lake Tahoe Basin and other systems worldwide.

Organizational/Program Goals:

TERC continues to be a leader in the Lake Tahoe Basin, Truckee and surrounding region for providing scientific information about Lake Tahoe. Through our watershed education programs, TERC promotes scientific understanding to inspire conservation of freshwater resources, especially Lake Tahoe, and encourages activities that promote sustainable use of this national treasure. We are committed to providing objective scientific information for restoration and sustainable use of the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Our continued goals are to:

Promote Scientific Understanding of Lake Tahoe:

Develop hands-on science activities; conduct outreach to teachers, community groups, and visitors; host student groups, community members, and visitors; and conduct other outreach efforts to raise awareness of the environmental issues at Lake Tahoe. Our goal is to reach (through one-on-one interactions) a minimum of 10,000 people during the calendar year with effective and significant watershed education programs; 2)

Develop and Administer Effective Evaluation and Program Assessment:

Ensure that evaluation design will yield accurate data, objective analysis, and a reporting strategy that provides assessment of the education programs for ongoing program planning and development. Accurately track and report program participation and effectiveness.

Member Service Plan Overview and Outcomes:

The TERC Education Program Assistant(s) will develop and implement education and outreach programs. Duties will include hosting student and community groups at the UC Davis Tahoe Science Center and/or Tahoe City Field Station (Eriksson Education Center at the Historic Fish Hatchery) sites, developing hands-on science activities, researching and designing interpretive signage, developing and administering evaluation and program assessment tools (surveys, pre- and post-assessment, etc.), developing teacher training materials, coordinating events and conducting outreach to the community relevant to environmental issues in the watershed and beyond. This position is located on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe with offices primarily located in Incline Village, Nevada with additional activities in Tahoe City, California. The Tahoe region is a resort-based community with a relatively high cost of living, with amazing opportunities for outdoor recreation, skiing, hiking, and mountain biking. There are two small science education centers with exhibits (UC Davis Tahoe Science Center and UC Davis Eriksson Education Center) Opportunity to serve at world-class research laboratory in a U.S. Green Building Council LEED certified "Platinum" building at beautiful Lake Tahoe.

Housing :

A nearby condominium is available for rent to TERC AmeriCorps members, if desired. There is also a student house available to rent for one month if AmeriCorps members choose to seek alternative housing. Education Program Associate tasks include the organization and execution of various education programs: Education programs include science education center tours for adults/families/visitors/groups, student field trips, curriculum/exhibit development, event planning, public speaking/outreach, native plant demonstration garden programs, special events, exhibit and aquarium management, social media/marketing, etc. The tasks are divided among the team and generally divided into these two position descriptions: Education Program Assistant Position #1 tasks include, but are not limited to: Field Trip Coordination, Special Events Coordination, Marketing and Social Media, Summer Internship Program Assistant, Trout in the Classroom Project Coordination. Education Program Assistant Position #2 tasks include, but are not limited to: Volunteer Docent Coordination, Exhibit and Aquarium Maintenance Coordination, Database and Visitor Surveys, Citizen Science Program Assistance, and Tahoe City Field Station Demonstration Garden Coordination. While this is an environmental science education position, not all of the education programs are provided outdoors (this not an outdoor education position, although some of the programs are provided outdoors as weather allows).

Position Requirements:

Must be a U.S. Citizen, U.S. National, or Lawful Permanent Resident Alien of the U.S. Must have a minimum of an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution in related area and/ or equivalent experience/ training.. Must be a minimum of 18 years or older. Must not have a criminal history that precludes the applicant's ability to work with vulnerable populations, such as the youth and elderly. UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus. Smoking, the use of smokeless tobacco products, and the use of unregulated nicotine products (e-cigarettes) will be strictly prohibited on any UC Davis owned or leased property, indoors and outdoors, including parking lots and residential space. Background in science and/or education (coursework or relevant experience) Experience with formal or informal education program development delivery and administration. National Service Benefits:

Up to 30,500 living allowance for term of service, $2,773 per month. Segal AmeriCorps Education Award upon successful completion of hours for the enrolled term of service. Combined California For All Education Award (for Full Term members only) and the Segal Education Award for a total of $10,000. (FT/1700 hr members only) Healthcare, Dental, Vision coverage for members (FT/1700 hr members only) Childcare assistance if eligible (FT/1700 hr members only) Student Loan Deferment & Interest Forbearance if eligible. Member Development fund of $500 to support training, networking, and professional development opportunities that can be utilized and will be valued by future employers after the service term is completed.

National Service Qualifications:
