CIVIL SERVICE TITLE
(S) : School Aide/Student Behavioral Assistant/Teacher AideJOB DESCRIPTION
The Paraprofessional assists instructional staff and works with students with disabilities, individually or in small or whole groups, to support academic instruction, behavioral regulation, social-emotional development, and physical needs in accordance with classroom expectations and Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).TYPICAL DUTIES
: Assist teachers in implementing instructional activities and classroom routines Work with students individually or in small groups to reinforce learning and skill development Support students with behavioral, social-emotional, and self-regulation needs under teacher direction Assist with supervision of students during arrival, dismissal, transitions, lunch, recess, and school activities Attend to students' physical needs, which may include toileting, hygiene, feeding, lifting, transferring, and mobility assistance Assist students with classroom materials, instructional technology, and assistive technology, as appropriate Support the implementation of behavior plans and classroom management strategies Assist with preparation of instructional materials and classroom organization Attends classroom team meetings and professional development opportunities, as appropriate Maintain confidentiality and follow all district policies and procedures May complete Therapeutic Crisis Intervention for Schools (TCIS) training and maintain required annual recertification; applies TCIS strategies to proactively prevent, de-escalate, and respond to behavioral challenges; and consistently utilizes positive behavior strategies aligned with students' current behavior intervention and treatment plans to support students throughout the school day Complete required documentation such as data collection, incident reports, or logs as directed Provides comprehensive assistance and unwavering support to all students, without exception, ages 3 to 22, at any location within the Department for Exceptional Children Perform other duties as assigned by Exceptional Children AdministrationSPECIAL SKILLS & APTITUDES
: Candidates must be flexible, patient, physically/emotionally able to handle confrontational situations with students without personalizing these events. The candidates will also need to be resilient to dealing with sudden, explosive crises that may cause deviations from work plans and schedules.JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Must possess or meet requirements for Civil Service title of School Aide, Student Behavioral Assistant, or Teacher Aide School Aide- No education or experience qualifications; Teacher Aide
- One (1) year of full-time or its part-time equivalent paid or volunteer equivalent experience working in a clerical capacity; OR One (1) year of full-time or its part-time equivalent paid or volunteer equivalent experience working with children; OR Possession of a certificate of completion for a course for Child Care through an occupational school, The American Red Cross or similar agency; Student Behavioral Assistant•Two (2) years of full-time paid or the part-time equivalent experience involving the supervision, counseling or instruction of children in a school facility, institution or agency devoted to the care, education, rehabilitation or detention of children; OR Graduation from a regionally accredited or NYS registered college or university with an Associate's degree or completion of 60 credit hours.
