: The Per Diem Substitute Paraprofessional assists instructional staff by providing support to students with disabilities during staff absences. Support may be provided to individual students or small groups and may include academic, behavioral, social-emotional, and physical assistance across a variety of special education settings.TYPICAL DUTIES
: Assist classroom teachers in supporting students with disabilities during instructional activities. Work with students individually or in small groups to reinforce learning, engagement, and positive behavior. Support students with social-emotional, behavioral, and self-regulation needs as directed by classroom staff. Assist with student supervision during arrival, dismissal, transitions, lunch, recess, and other school activities. Attend to students' physical needs, which may include toileting, feeding, hygiene, mobility, lifting, and transferring, as required. Assist students with the use of instructional materials, classroom technology, and assistive technology, as appropriate. Support the implementation of behavior plans and classroom management strategies under teacher direction. Assist with preparation of instructional materials and classroom activities. Maintain student confidentiality and follow all district policies and procedures. Work in multiple classrooms, programs, or locations within a school day as assigned. Perform other duties related to student support as assigned by Exceptional Children Administration.SPECIAL SKILLS & APTITUDES
: Candidates must be flexible, patient, physically/emotionally able to handle confrontational situations with students without personalizing these events. The candidates will also need to be resilient to dealing with sudden, explosive crises that may cause deviations from work plans and schedules.QUALIFICATIONS
: Must possess or meet requirements for Civil Service title of School Aide, Student Behavioral Assistant, or Teacher Aide. School Aide- No education or experience qualifications; Teacher Aide
- One (1) year of full-time or its part-time equivalent paid or volunteer equivalent experience working in a clerical capacity; OR One (1) year of full-time or its part-time equivalent paid or volunteer equivalent experience working with children; OR Possession of a certificate of completion for a course for Child Care through an occupational school, The American Red Cross or similar agency; Student Behavioral Assistant•Two (2) years of full-time paid or the part-time equivalent experience involving the supervision, counseling or instruction of children in a school facility, institution or agency devoted to the care, education, rehabilitation or detention of children; OR Graduation from a regionally accredited or NYS registered college or university with an Associate's degree or completion of 60 credit hours.
