Teaching Assistant TITLE:
Teaching Assistant
QUALIFICATIONS
1. A minimum of a High School diploma or equivalent required at the time of hire. 2. Must complete 9 credit hours of college coursework within 3 years after receiving Level 1 Teaching Assistant certification. 3. Must complete an additional 9 credit hours of college coursework within 3 years after obtaining Level II teaching assistant certification. 4. Completion of all workshops required by the New York State Education Department (Child Abuse workshop; School Violence Prevention workshop; Harassment, Bullying and Discrimination Prevention and Intervention workshop). 5. Complete and pass with a qualifying score the New York State Assessment of Teaching Assistant Skills (NYSATAS) test. 6. Completion of fingerprinting process. 7. Ability to maintain discipline. 8. Ability to use good judgment and tact. 9. Demonstrates courteous behavior. 10. Meet good moral character requirement.

1. Certified Teacher to whom assigned. 2. Building Principal and/or Director of Special Education.
NATURE OF THE POSITION
The position of Teaching Assistant is established to provide, under the general supervision of a licensed or certified teacher, direct instructional services to students. This includes working with individual pupils or groups of pupils as well as developing materials for instruction. Although the assistant in specific instructional activities must exercise considerable judgement, the supervising teacher determines the instructional functions to be performed. Some supervision of pupils and other tasks will also be required.

ACTIVITIES
AND DUTIES
Under the guidance, planning and review of the classroom teacher, the assistant may independently instruct students in various areas, either individually or in small group settings; the assistant may work with individual pupils or groups of pupils on instructional programs.
Assist in related instructional work as required by teachers.
Provide the teacher(s) with information about pupils that will assist the teachers in the development of appropriate learning experiences.
Assist pupils in the use of available instructional resources including computer programs.
Utilize own special skills and abilities by assisting interest areas.
To assist in preparation of instructional materials (such as sending worksheets to office to be copied).
Supervise children's behavior to their understanding of appropriate school habits and attitudes.
Monitor or provide classroom coverage during short-term teacher absence from the room.
Correct routine assignments that have model answers.
Assist in the management of classroom records, materials and equipment.
Assist in providing for the physical needs of children.
Attend necessary meetings.
Perform such other duties and assumes such other responsibilities as the Building Principal, Director of Special Education Services and/or classroom teacher may from time to time assign.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
The work year is the same as that of the teaching staff.
The workday varies between buildings and assignments.
