SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Students as directed by the classroom teacher and administration
SUMMARY:
A paraprofessional assists the teacher in helping students achieve learning objectives, supervises students outside of the classroom and provides administrative support for teaching. (updated 10/2017)
QUALIFICATION/BASIC JOB REQUIREMENTS
(updated 10/2017) A high school diploma or GED. 48 college credits or an AA degree or a successful passing score on the PRAXIS test. College credits in elementary education, special education or a related educational field preferred. Previous experience working with children as an aide, daycare provider, or a related area working with children preferred. Ability to operate a computer and related software.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES
Works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning materials or skills initially introduced by the teacher. Assists the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on a sympathetic understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities. Helps students master equipment or instructional materials assigned by the teacher. Operates and cares for the equipment used in the classroom. Reads to students, listens to the students read, and participates in other forms of oral communication with the students. Assists in checking and recording student attendance. Helps maintain individual records for students; assists with daily, quarterly or yearly clerical duties as requested by the teacher. Distributes and collects workbooks, papers, and other materials for instruction. Checks notebooks, corrects papers, and supervises testing and make-up work as assigned by the teacher. Substitutes for classroom teacher in his/her absence if asked by the building administrator. Alerts the regular teacher to any problem or special information about an individual student. Serves as the chief source of information and help to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teacher. Maintains the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as is expected of certified teachers. Participates in all family nights, programs, and extra-curricular activities at the school as assigned by the building administrator. Supervises recess, breakfast, lunch, hallways, busing and restrooms as assigned. Other duties as assigned.
OTHER FUNCTIONS
Assists with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, and field trips. The employee is continuously responsible for the safety, well-being and work output of students. Assists teachers in keeping bulletin boards and other classroom learning displays up to date. Assists with lunch, snack, and cleanup routines. Helps students with their clothing as needed. Collects and records collection of money for raffles and fundraisers. Participates in inservice training/workshops/programs as assigned.
