Job Description
Job Summary The Head Start Teacher Assistant supports the Lead Teacher in implementing a developmentally appropriate curriculum, fostering a safe and engaging learning environment, and promoting positive relationships with children, families, and staff. This position assists with lesson delivery, classroom management, and daily routines to ensure quality early childhood education services. Competency Area Responsibilities Key Behaviors Instructional Support Assist the Lead Teacher in planning and implementing daily activities. Support small-group and individual instruction. Help prepare learning materials and classroom displays. Follow lesson plans and directions from the Lead Teacher. Engage children in meaningful and developmentally appropriate activities. Encourage exploration and problem-solving Child Supervision & Safety Supervise children during classroom, outdoor, and transition times. Adhere to Head Start safety protocols and child-staff ratios. Report accidents, incidents, and safety concerns promptly. Maintain visual and auditory supervision at all times. Conduct regular safety checks of the environment. Respond quickly to prevent and address unsafe situations Family Engagement & Communication Greet families and assist with daily child drop-off and pick-up. Share positive updates about children's progress. Support family involvement activities. Communicate respectfully and professionally with families. Maintain confidentiality. Encourage family participation in program activities. Professionalism & Continuous Improvement Attend training and professional development sessions. Comply with Head Start policies and regulations. Demonstrate reliability and punctuality Evidence of skill growth and development Apply knowledge from training to daily work. Exhibit professionalism in all interactions Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent; CDA or coursework in early childhood education preferred. Experience working with young children in a classroom or childcare setting. Ability to adapt to varied roles and responsibilities Ability to communicate in English, both verbally and written Licenses/Certifications Current CPR and First Aid certification (or ability to obtain). Valid Texas Driver License Obtain a preschool CDA within agency required time. Background clearance as required by state and federal regulations. Working Conditions & Physical Demands Classrooms, playgrounds, kitchen, and other Head Start facilities. Ability to lift up to 40 pounds, Frequent bending, standing, sitting on the floor, and active movement Exposure to common childhood illness Performs other duties as assigned Performance Indicators Performance reviews reflect adherence to standards Compliance with all Head Start standards and state licensing Staff report satisfaction with communication and coordination Apply feedback to improve performance to reflect effective assistance. Demonstrate reliability and punctuality Perform other duties as assigned by the Center Director and/or management team member
