QUALIFICATIONS
The candidate must have at least a high school diploma or GED equivalent. An Associate's Degree or higher in Education, Special Education, or a related field is preferred. Experience working with students with special needs is highly desirable. Must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to follow written and oral instructions is essential. Patience, compassion, and a strong desire to work with high school students with diverse learning needs are required. Must pass a background check and any additional requirements as determined by the school district.
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
The Special Education Teacher's Assistant will support the special education teacher in providing instructional and behavioral support to students with special needs. The assistant will help implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), support students in their academic and social development, and ensure a safe and productive learning environment. As a para-educator, non-licensed classification Teacher Assistant may, with supervision from a teacher or a principal, assist with the preparation of lesson plans, implement lesson plans, and initiation of new lessons as instructed. However, they may not have final responsibility for assessment, evaluation, and grading of students. If hired, the candidate must complete online autism training. GENERAL DUTIES
(May not include all duties performed) Assist the special education teacher in implementing IEPs for students with special needs. Provide one-on-one or small group instruction to students under the teacher's direction. Support students with daily activities, including personal care, as needed. Monitor and document student progress and behavior. Assist in the preparation of instructional materials and classroom organization. Supervise students during classroom transitions, lunch, recess, and other activities. Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment for all students. Communicate effectively with students, teachers, and parents. Assist with the implementation of behavioral management plans. Participate in staff meetings, professional development, and training sessions as required. Assists students with personal care and other specific student needs. Performs other related work as assigned.
SUPERVISION
Employee reports directly to the School Principal.
WORK CONDITIONS
Duties performed are typically in the school setting. Performs professional work providing support and consultative services for assigned department/program. Work requires frequent standing, sitting, walking, and light lifting, up to 50 lbs. Some assignments are subject to deadlines inherent in tailoring and delivering programs to meet the needs of diverse groups. Some assignments may involve exposure to risks associated with interactions with parents and students in heightened emotional states. Employees may be required to perform emergency and non-emergency health-related services for students as needed.
